We have a Holland Lop doe who is currently on a 10-day old litter, and I am worried about her as she has just started sneezing. Over the past few days, I have heard her sneeze maybe once a day, and this evening she did it a couple of times. No snot/discharge, no matting of the front paws, and she is eating and drinking a LOT. There are fine pine shavings on the bottom of her nestbox and of course hay and fur. I just cleaned it out yesterday and took out most of the fur and put in fresh hay. I used to use pine shavings in their trays and recently switched to wood pellets, but she had no problems with the pine then. These shavings are finer. The only change she has gone through since kindling is the new cage yesterday. It has been bleached, but she was the one using it before that anyway. None of our rabbits have been to a show for the past six weeks, and we haven't added anyone to our rabbitry either. Both the buck and doe were thoroughly examined before breeding and were found to be healthy, the buck still appears to be perfectly healthy. Any ideas about what the sneezing could be from or what to do about it other than quarantine her and watch her? |

My Rescue Buck started all of sudden sneezing on Saturday. No discharge, no matted paws, eyes nice and clear. As we watched him, he's digging his face into the hay. Could have gotten something up his nose. He's scratched the inside of his ear before from sharp hay. Next day he was fine. This "panic" created over"sneezing is automatically snuffles" is what puts people on edge. Just observe her and her kits. It could be just a reaction to some dust. Or maybe bleach. Maybe rinsing the crate again just to be sure? |

If she's in a wire bottomed cage, she wouldn't have been in contact with the shavings before. If could be that she's able to dig and smell the shavings up close now. Especially if it's fine, like you said. I wouldn't panic, but do keep a very close eye on her and the other rabbits. You may want to quarantine, it's up to you. |

Gee, it could be the scent of bleach then? I know that when we have neighbors coming over and they have cologne on, my rabbits back off immediately, and then sneeze afterwards. Since you KNOW your rabbits were healthy at time of breeding with thorough Vet check, I would just observe, IMHO. Quarantine if you must, just to be safe? Also moving your doe to a "new" space will bring out stress, and stress brings on illness, so maybe doing that will bring on illness so you can see, or the stress won't and it's just allergies or dust, not "snuffles". |

Thanks for the advice! I doubt it's the bleach. I always bleach and cages and rinse thoroughly before switching rabbits, and she has never had a problem. She is in quarantine right now, and I am keeping an eye on her. I was just reading somewhere that the stress of raising a litter can bring out sneezing in does, and they are fine after weaning. Of course it could also be dust from hay, pellets, or shavings. Yes, I go into panic mode when I hear sneezing because I have snuffles in the back of my mind. But, after doing tons of reading and research last night (and the encouragement on here ) I am not nearly as worried.

Glad to hear it's not the bleach. And interesting to hear that some does that kindle until weaning do sneeze, but it dissipates at weaning time. I was reading more on environment. I did read that "kindling" will bring out illnesses in does because of the stress. Also mating will bring illnesses out in bucks because of the stress. Good for you for doing your research, appreciate you sharing that interesting information regarding does "temporary" sneezing. Also, glad you found some peace of mind as well. We all worry, but we shouldn't have to panic with "sneezing". Understand "snuffles" is a deadly disease for rabbits, but I can't just go right to "snuffles" when a rabbit sneezes, like Vets and some breeders do. Lots of reading and research has help me get out of the "it's snuffles" right away. Still worry, because I always worry, it's just my way, but I'm not in a "Panic Mode" anymore. Knowledge is Power. Please let us know how your doe and the kits do after the "quarantine". |

Just wanted to give a little update on my doe... her sneezing gradually lessened and as expected, I haven't heard a single sneeze since her litter was weaned! |
