I recently tattooed all my rabbits. I have one of those clamp style tattoos. One of my rabbits developed an infection from the tattoo. There is a knot in the ear full of puss. I have been draining the puss 2-3 times a day for about 5 days now. I know he needs some antibiotics to help speed recovery. But the vets around here are an easy $200 visit for something like this. I have some 110mg doxycycline pills left over from when I had my dog spayed a month ago. I was thinking that maybe I could crush half a pill up and mix it with water and syringe it down his throat once a day for 7 days. He is a 6 month old, Flemish Giant/New Zealand White mix, that is about 10 pounds. Does that sound like something safe I can do? Thanks!!! |

I'm not sure about what you are thinking, but are you able to get some Pen G? They sell it at feed stores around here. |

I was looking at this website---- http://www.medirabbit.com/Safe_medication/Antibiotics/Safe_antibiotics.htm It says doxy is safe orally(PO) and once a day dosage for my boy would be 45mg per day. I'm trying to use what I have around the house because the feed store is 45 minutes away(one way). I'm sure they have amoxicillin at the feed store. Just wondered if anyone had used doxy on their rabbits before? |

Sorry never used doxy on rabbits, but I actually bookmarked that page when I first came upon it as it's good information to know what's safe for rabbits. If it was me, I would use the doxy. It's there, it's safe. |
