I have never delt with weepy eye before, but I THINK one of my Jr.s has it. At first I just noticed it was a little wet, and wiped his eye and forgot about it, but the next day it was worse. There's no sneezing or runny nose. What is the best way to treat or should I just cull her? I have been using Neosporin and have to pick up the eye stuff I ordered tomorrow. I hope it helps because the Neosporin only made the redness go away. But they are still watering. She has had it for at least a month now. :/

"weepy" eye could also be a sign for problems with teeth. As the Neosporin is taking the red out, the weeping is still going on. I know that at Jr age, most small rabbits will show teeth problems. Not just the front teeth but the molars as well. It's been a month, and something is still going on with this rabbit healthwise. I would definitely never breed this rabbit because whatever is going on could pass. And if it's teeth problems, definitely.

I've heard people talk about using Neosporin to treat eye infections before and always wondered ... the OTC human stuff I buy very clearly says to NOT get it in the eyes. Are you really using the regular OTC stuff or is there a separate ophthalmic formula?

When I've had eye problems (weepy or gunky) on rabbits and guinea pigs I've bought an ophthalmic gel -- terramycin or (now that's gotten impossible to find that here) Vetricyn.

Other issues that can cause weepy eyes -- (1) exposure to ammonia (not cleaning cages enough - especially in summer -- some rabbits are way more sensitive than others), (2) scratched cornea (rabbit scratches at an irritant like hay or mosquitos and catches eye - these can take months to heal even with treatment), (3) dust (I've got one rabbit I can never keep in a bottom cage because he always ends up with irritated eyes, (4) bent/twisted/ingrown lashes, (5) infection of the inner eyelid, (6) conjunctivitis (rabbits get 'pink eye' - just like humans - several different viruses can cause a case that typically last a week, a few bacteria can cause a case that lasts much longer).

Since this has lasted so long, I would be putting that bunny in quarantine (or at least the farthest/highest cage) and getting an ointment that has a stronger antibiotic in it.

Neubunny really covered a lot of incidents that could cause "weepy" eye. Really good to know, and would definitely take her advise of quarantine.

Hoping you can find out the problem that is causing this constant weepy eye. Let us know how it goes with her.

I have had issues with this too. Initially I used eye ointment from the vet.....that just made the fur really gungy and when it ran out I stopped using it. It seemed to make no difference any way. Then I noticed two more rabbits with the issue. As NeuBunny has suggested ammonia can really build up fast and in hutches with night compartments there's not much air flow and this was the reason I've started to dismantle them and replace with wire. The other issue again suggested by NeuBunny was dust. Nibbled hay and pellets make dust! The issue has finally resolved itself and might have been due to these environmental issues rather than infection. I believe rabbits have very sensitive eyes and that's why they were used for shampoo testing. Something about tears or tear ducts and not being able to flush the eye clean. I need to read up.
