Chinchilla vs. Chestnut Agouti (with one japanese gene)

American Chinchilla x Blue Japanese Harlequin = half kits look chestnut agouti w/ some barring, half look chin w/ barring but have a dusting of chestnut along normal 'agouti' places.... Are these just extremely poor japanese? The chestnut coloring is nothing like their true japanese littermates, it's like they ran through a dusting of light brown. Bellies are white, some paws are very white, etc. The doe is suspected of carrying a magpie gene, so I was not surprised when half the kits appeared magpie (chinchilliated japanese) but was surprised when this orange started to appear. Both of her parents were japanese (a black and a blue) and have decent rufus, she does as well (as far as blues go)... Can't imagine her passing on so much rufus to half the litter and not to the other half, so I didn't know if the single japanese gene is causing all of this... The only way I can forsee testing is to breed one of these "dusted mags" to a magpie to see if all kits turn out clean magpies once both japanese genes are present...

Thoughts?

In case reh's post is too cryptic...

It sounds to me like your kits are a mix of C_Eej and cch_Eej, and that what's confusing you is that young chinchilla can show some tan colour (according to what I've read and as illustrated in reh's first two images) especially when there is a lot of rufous. If this is the case then the japanese aspect is just a distraction and the tan on the light kits should fade as they age, leaving them more obviously a chinchillated* version of the barred chestnut kits.

*chinchillated - good word

Thanks for the replies! Been so busy I hadn't the chance to check back on here. YES they looked liked that first kit (only with a few darker bars) and YES the rust is fading quickly. They are now about 2mo and it's pretty much gone. They are still clearly chinchilla.

Well that makes me glad, glad my doe is a chin (magpie) carrier and glad that it's not just extremely poor rufus. I'm more open to choosing one of the chin/mag kits now. I will try to get some photos of the next generation as well. I know a lot of folks think you destroy the markings on your harlequins when you cross out. Yes you do the first generation the second generation you can have incredible markings and poor in the same litter, just like the purebreds it's all a bit of a gamble :D

This topic reminds me of this chestnut/harlequin doe, so i looked her up for you.

She comes out of a chocolate and magpie.
