Curious to know the view on when you consider your breeding line your own. I will be looking into purchasing someone else's hard work, who will help me start to obtain the goal of my rabbits, so I would like to know what the timeline, per say, is to when I can state or register my LH's as my own. I despise people who misrepresent. Would it be three generations away from the original breeder's stock? Or is that just my honesty showing? lol I respect all breeders who work hard and are proud of their accomplished goals. I will respect their start and build from what I've learned, and continue to learn, as I do respect my breed and do have my own view of what my breed should be, and one day hope to be proud of my accomplishments and help someone else who would like to do the same as me. Really don't want to step on toes. It's all new to me. Appreciate any input. Thanks! |

I have wondered this but I don't think of it much. I only ever mention the lines a rabbit comes from when people ask... and even then I don't mention my own. I usually use bucks from someone else and does from my own breeding. I think that you'll be using rabbits from other breeders for a while. Usually it takes years for you to start developing a line.

I think it depends who's animals you use and have used to give it a persons name. And also with how independant or dependant you are with outcrossing to mix with another line. When you just started (like me) there is nothing you have build up yet, so there is nothing to call your "own". But when you are a few generations further and have made progress with type, color, quality, you can say you're establishing your line. I think your method of breeding does also have a say. If you linebreed with your own animals and have enough bucks to switch out without getting a buck from someone else, they are your product only. But when you regularly get a new buck/doe from outside and use different lines to build up yours, then you're still dependant of others and using their animals, their time, their effort, which you should not call yours. Again, i think everyone has a different opinion on this or maybe there is a decided set rule to when you are allowed to call a line yours, i don't know. But this is how i look at it. Oh, I do say "my black line" though... Usually saying "this bunny is cute, my black line is improving" or "this bunny is sweet even though it comes from my black line".

Thanks Disney and Sidd. Don't see any problems with either way you both look at it. Sidd, they are your lines as they are your does. Plus you take are of those kits from Day One until they go to their new homes. Lots of people buy rabbits for good health, lovely coloring, but don't bother with generations before. They want to show, which they can, (I believe you strive show quality) they can do agility (love seeing those Holland ears fly) or just be companions. Or help someone with their breeding program. I'm looking more to registering in the future. I would like to register my line, which I think I lean towards Disney's way of looking at it. I would like to breed generations, say 3 generations with my rabbits, with no outside help except for the original foundation. If I should need to bring in another rabbit, say to spruce up my colors, I would have to have 3 generations after that color help to call it my line. Thanks again for the replies. |

Interesting line of thought ... I think of certain rabbitry names as being 'lines' but of course even those are rarely a complete pedigree all of one -- usually you see at least a few outcrosses on a 3 generation pedigree. Unless you have a lot of rabbits, it's very hard to go more than three generations without 'bringing in new blood'. I think for me, deciding when to call my rabbits a 'line' will have more to do with when I reach the point that breedings are a consistent type/quality. When I can make statements (as I see many do) that "my line is in their 'uglies' at 3-4 months", or "my line has good type except shoulders need work", or even "I can tell at 4 weeks which ones are going to be show quality" - that will let me know I'm getting a consistent set of genetic traits fixed together - which to me is what constitutes a genetic line. So long as I'm still saying kit A has good ears, kit B has bad ears but good wool, kits C has great color ... not consistent and not a line. Nonetheless, the name you put on the pedigree is immediately yours if the doe is yours. (If purchased already bred, then sometimes the previous owner wants their name on the litter, that has to be worked out at the time of purchase). And when you sell those kits and someone asks their new owner what 'lines' it is from, they should say your name (as well as the others on the pedigree). |

Good points, Neubunny. When you're able to easily evaluate your youngsters from experience with the lines you work with and start seeing consistency in appearance, I think you're definitely getting there. Never thought of it that way.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts on what a "line" is. Definitely gave me something to think about regarding my line. Well, when I finally get a line, lol. Knowing what will be produced in a nestbox, knowing the stages of your kits growth, having an idea when looking at a young kit, because of prior litters, definitely would think you know your lines. Again thanks again for helping this curious mind. lol |

An excellent question, quite philosophical too I think. For me....I bought five super NDs from a breeder years back and I breed within these buns and try to retain the wonderful type. I'm not changing anything major but I guess small apparently unnoticed changes might occur without me being conscious of it. I still think of these animals and their progeny as the breeder's line. I have a silver and red line which although the foundation stock came from a breeder only two years ago, I have changed so much and consider it my line. |

Agreed, I don't currently have any second generation rabbits from my own line (though I have bred some), only first (mainly because we have limited space, and I only keep the best) and I've had rabbits for 3-4 years. |

I think I have up to 4 gens with one of my does in each gen but of course that's just on the doe's side. I have bred 2 of "my" rabbits together before but I don't think I kept any. Working on it. Definitely takes time! Although I like to see my rabbitry name quite a few times on my pedigrees it's not very high up in my priorities list.

Love that this thread is still alive. Thanks for continuing discussing this question. I know in my heart that I will let everyone know where I got my rabbits, or my start in showing. Truly appreciate the work people do to get their rabbits to where they are, and helping me start with my showing program. Even if I'm in showing for years and know my own rabbits. Not a big deal for my name to be on a pedigree, Just thought there was a protocol in ARBA on talking about lines, registering rabbits. Respect those who worked hard, respect their rabbits. Thanks! |
