Good to hear "practicing" has begun with the little guy. Hoping your big plans pan out. Fingers crossed. |

I had the four well grown red does line up today trying to decide which has the better colour. There's the bright and shiny kinda dark orange and the dark red but matt...I just can't decide which to go with. I've a pictures but it just doesn't show the differences. |

Go with your gut feeling on which doe to breed. Take your time, don't rush your decision. Sometimes getting help through pictures is difficult. That's when you as a breeder need to make those choices on you own. Don't rush. You can make the right choice. |

what's the buck? lol -- I'd be trying to cross a dark red matte with a shiny orange to aim for shiny dark red! |

I've red buns, clean even coloured red. But you have to see the Thrianta....the red is incredible. My line started with a Thrianta buck to an agouti ND doe.....a couple of years later I have wonderfully small rabbits but the red is mat. I've put these back to the Thrianta and still the glowing red doesn't appear. I know the American Dutch people have attempted to put this Thrianta red on their buns and I can see they cave the same issue. What is missing in the crossing? I have thought about going via the New Zealand Red too. However......I've reached max rabbit accommodation and unless I move into a gym and win the lottery, this dream has to end. |

I've seen thriantas - and heard before how hard it is to keep that deep glowing red (even within the breed). It has to be due to a multiple recessive gene combination. Which means the solution to getting it back is likely repeated linebreeding (and expecting lots of culls). With two recessive genes (assume one gene for shiny and 1 gene for red) and parents who are both AaBb - the chance of getting aabb is just 1 in 16. aaBb x Aabb gives 1 in 4. jump to 4 genes with the goal aabbccdd (2 genes for shiny and 2 genes for red) - both parents AaBbCcDd - the chance of getting aabbcc is 1 in 256. aabbCcDd x AaBbccdd = 1 in 16. more genes (not to mention the ones you need for type) and those odds really fall. Other than using a thrianta again (which would mess with type) best odds are always going to be to cross a rabbit that shows the trait wanted with one that has a parent who carried it. So for highest odds you want a shiny rabbit that had a dark red parent with a dark red rabbit that had a shiny parent. Edited by NeuBunny, Oct 26 2013, 09:18 AM.

Excellent information and advice NeuBunny. I really appreciate this. In the morning I'm going to see what's what and have a longhand think. |

At the ripe old age of 4 months 3 weeks the boy's bit are now there. Never thought I'd be so pleased to see such a pair! Patience I guess. |

YEA for the boy bits making a show. Yes, patience is a virtue. And most of the time, it pays off. |

OK...a twist....this boy was in with his mom up till about four weeks ago. He never seemed to show any funny business and I thought what with the testicle issue that he was a mommy's boy.....so.....mom has now got 2 youngsters. A week old. Despite the undescended testicle, he was obviously still capable which is news to me. |

Sounds like this young boy was learning how to hold his testies inside before he actually let them drop. Bucks have that ability to draw their testies up inside their bodies as a defense system. Well now you know he's got the stuff to do the deed. How is Mom and the 2 youngsters doing? KAZ |

Hi Z, mom is very well but the two kits died in the night. Out of the nest. Healthy looking but a subzero (Celsius) night. |

So sorry to hear the kits were lost. Glad to hear Mom is doing well. Well now you know the boy in question can do the job. Hopefully next time when you decide who he should be with, healthy kits will appear. KAZ |
