I started in rabbits through FFA.
Anyone else do that?

I actually bred out school's rabbits and got my very first doe from there.

I started showing the chapter rabbit in 7th grade, and received my first rabbit, a Mini Rex. Eventually in 10th grade I started getting more serious with the ladies in charge of my school's FFA (they were also rabbit breeders) and went to ARBA shows. That's also how I went on my first trip to a national show (Himi Nationals in Indiana). It was a school trip through the club. Wow, that was almost 8 years ago.

FFA? Future Farmers of America, right?

I think it's an excellent program for children to learn about farming, animals, etc.

FFA, is it different than 4H? Unfortunately in my County, 4H has been shut out because the County sold the land. Shame. I don't believe we have an FFA either. Garden State no longer the Garden State I'm afraid to say. Do have some farms out there, but they are being pushed out for "open space". Or connected people who have a cow or donkey as an ornament in the front yard, who are getting the funds that should go to the Farmers.

Truly hope this is not the trend in other States. Farmers made this Country.

Here in the midwest - FFA and 4H are going strong in MOST counties. FFA seems to be highschool focused and associated with the schools (same as other after school programs like sports, music, etc). 4H is county-run, family-based (nearly entirely run by parent volunteers) for ages 5-19. Big push here in recent years to take 4H beyond 'farming/agriculture' and into more science and leadership. We have urban clubs focused on robotics, rocketry, food science, horticulture, etc. And 'pet' projects are also on the rise in our urban areas -- rabbits, cavies, dogs, cats and pigeons are increasingly common 4H animal projects. Haven't seen a rise in poultry projects, but with Chelsea (local town where our club is based) and Ann Arbor (nearest large city) both approving backyard chickens in recent years, I think that will be coming.

Not all our schools have FFA programs, but many - especially those in rural districts - do. All our counties have 4H programs (though we've had to consolidate in recent years so now our 'county' coordinators each have to help 2-3 counties.
