Fawkes did the same thing when he was ill. He wouldn't eat unless I hand fed him. Just like Star is doing. Maybe a blockage is still there? Have you tried mineral oil, just a little. And how about pineapple juice. You could either syringe or put in her water. How's her poo output? Has that been normal or has it slowed? KAZ |

Just thought of something. I know with Molly and Ginnie, if I don't show them I've put something in their food bowl (treats or wheatgrass) they don't know it's there. Will look at me like "where's mine". So have to actually show them their food bowl to let them know there is actually something in there. Could be Star didn't see you drop the pineapple in and just didn't know until you showed it to her? At least she's still nibbling on hay and drinking. I know when Ginnie went through her molt, she barely touched her pellets, but did eat tons of hay. Was worried about her not eating pellets and just kept an eye on her. After her molt though, she chows down on the pellets and hay. KAZ |

Since she's not eating, she probably just didn't look in her food dish. Most likely didn't notice that you put something yummier than pellets in there. Sorry to hear that she's not eating again - my fingers are crossed again. I wonder what the problem is. |

a little pellets gone this morning. Hand fed her more pineapple, which she nibbled rather than devouring. water and hay gone, so at least that's in her. maybe she's just eating a lot less pellets because she has unlimited hay? hay's probably better for her as she re-adjusts. At least I'm still getting my hands on really nice timothy. |

Glad to hear Star is eating. And I would think if unlimited hay is being offered, it would cut down on the amount of pellets she would want. Went through the same thing with Ginnie when she went through her first molt. I was just glad she was eating and things were still moving. Hoping she continues to eat for you. A good supply of Timothy hay is just as good as it will help with her gut flora balance and also will help with the moving any blockage. Have you tried old fashioned oats? I was worried about Ginnie and her weight loss at that first molt. Did help until she started to really go back to her pellets. KAZ |

hmmm... oats might be a good idea ... they seem to be working well for Theodore (guinea pig). right now, she seems to be eating pellets every other day -- last night half the bowl was gone, but she refused to even sniff the pineapple and was acting a little odd again. I'm thinking about sifting the pellets before I feed them to her (4H leader mentioned she does this with her rabbit food to keep the fines out) in case it is the fines in the feed that are 'stopping her up'. |

I check my pellets for fine as well. Been lucky that the brand I use is stable in manufacturing practices. I'm fortunate to have a personal relationship with both pet store and the owner, who is WELL educated and WELL informed makes sure his stock is consistent. Maybe the sifting of the pellets to remove the fine will help Star. But I would definitely look into the oats as this could help put weight back on as it is for Theodore. We are also fortunate with our pet store, as the owner has found pure oat buds. In other words, the top of the grain. And it is organically grown for what that is worth. My rabbits love it. Good for a treat once in while. KAZ |

Theodore is getting Quaker from the grocery store - just a tablespoon twice a day. Hesitate to add anything to Star's diet when she is still this off. Going to pick up some plain yogurt (4H leaders suggestion) tonight and see if she will take that. Thought this morning whether the temperature is a factor on the pineapple (pulling it out of the refrigerator) -- she didn't even want to sniff it when I put it in her cage this morning, but when I circled back and tried again an hour later, she nibbled the edges. |

Sounds like temperature is an issue for her with the pineapple. We had a feed issue in August. Lost a whole show string of juniors. Took me a while to figure out what was going on. At first I thought it was cocci or worms, ect. The symptoms didn't fit anything specific until a friend suggested mold poisoning. The more I researched the more I was sure that was the problem. Switched to a new bag of feed and found 2 pellets stuck together with mold on them. I knew for sure it was bad feed then. Some just had dark loose poo, others had clear poo that looked like jelly. Most of the ones that the poo went clear I lost. We are still loosing up to one a month from weight loss even when they are eating. So far two does palpate positive for breeding. One is due today. Her last litter of four she delivered during the mold poisoning was peanuts or hippos. Hope she has a good litter this time. Safegaurd & Sulmet at the beginning when I didn't know what was going on. Vitamin E capsules cut open at the end & squeezed into a rabbit's mouth. seemed to help the most. I added Aloe Vera Juice to water to sooth tummies. Baby Gas Drops (big help). Pineapple & Steam Rolled Oats (can't find good timothy hay around here) to help get gut moving again. New feed brand. |

My rabbits do not like to eat anything that is right out of the refrigerator. Always need to warm it up a bit, so maybe the cold pineapple just didn't interest Star. How did the yogurt go down for Star? Hopefully that was the trick. Poor Star, definitely something going on with her. If it was a blockage, I would think she would stop eating completely? Not just eating every other day. And showing pain. Any belly pressing or teeth grinding? She's passing poo and pee? So if she's doing that, would you think their is still a blockage? Maybe her gut flora is just out of wake, then giving her gas pains so she's only eating when the gas passes or dissipates? Hoping things turn around for Star. KAZ |

even though it is cold too, yogurt is a 'hit'. She wouldn't take it from the syringe (fought that) but then licked up everything that was on her front and my fingers. So I started just squirting on my finger and she licks that right off. Got a couple cc's into her yesterday morning and she ate half a cup of pellets (and lots of the hay) yesterday. So more yogurt this morning. First day she was all hunched up - but now her posture is normal and she doesn't show other signs of pain. poo looks normal, but there isn't as much of it as normal. She is drinking WAY more water than normal. lol - Nisshoku is jealous when I hold Star to feed her yogurt. She stomps at us the whole time Star is out. |

Great news about the yogurt helping. Hope it continues. Drinking water is also a positive because it does help with hydration and will help pass waste. Sounds like she had a little belly ache. Hoping it continues to where Star will be back to her ole self. KAZ |

Her bowl of pellets was empty last night -- not sure whether she ate it all or spilled it. But when I refilled the dish, she hopped straight to it and started eating - which is FINALLY back to normal behavior. She's also finally looking less 'hollow' (a minirex should NOT look like a brit where you can see daylight underneath from the side). Fingers crossed she's on a good road to recovery. |

Great News about Star. Glad to hear you are "over the hump" and hopefully smooth sailing for you with Star. Also glad to hear she has lost that "hollow" look. Figured out the issues with pellets with my flemish doe. Thought it was the pellets but it isn't. It's how she is eating them. She gulps down her pellets and then half hour later soft poo or cecal. Which I would think is a kind of "bloat". She never showed problems with gas, only that first poo after eating. So have basically cut her pellets in half and feed at different times plus in between, plenty of hay. So far, "knock on wood" it's been working and she's thriving well. KAZ |
