A very happy Christmas to all who post on here (or who just look in and have a read) I hope 2014 is a better year for all of us, and for the world, although I suspect austerity will bite in a way that a lot of people can't yet imagine and man's inhumanity to man will continue to shock and dismay. However, I hope the human spirit will triumph in the end.

Personally, I hope all those spammers who've posted here choke on their turkey.I don't know about next year being any better than this, but at least we're not spending Christmas with May-Cee and so are spared having to listen to Punk 45 - there's always a bright side. Do you hear what I hear? Better get to bed and pretend to be asleep. |

Christmas 2015 Although there's little activity here these days for whatever the reason, I would like to wish those who read this a ...together with a stress-free and easy time during the holidays... Special mention to Caro and her family...we haven't heard anything from her husband so I'm hoping that she is making a steady recovery... I've had my son staying for a month - he's returned back to his desert island...my daughter arrives from Athens on Wednesday...my eldest grand-daughter and her boyfriend, the romantically named Byron, are coming over from Greece on 21st December until 2nd January...so more of a family affair this year, together with friends who are not going away, dropping in for a bit of Christmas Cheer! Merry Christmas, one and both! I second your hopes re Caro, Mobs. And I hope you have an enjoyable time with your family. Just two Graces with us for Christmas this year, as Grace-2 has gone to S America. There may be a boyfriend knocking around and possibly, strange as it may seem, an ex - but I'm really not sure. Congratulations on your impending retirement, Rum. My last working day before I retire will probably be the day I keel over - or the day I win the lottery. I've just been looking at the Jokes thread. I was trying to find an old scam alert which I think Dai posted somewhere - but not on that thread, it seems. Still, there's some good stuff there and I spent quite a while chuckling to myself. Here's a seasonal offering from Norm (RIP):- http://s4.zetaboards.com/Radio4forum/single/?p=8594844&t=9735759 I wonder if it's just coincidence that the boy in that story is called Timmy. ![]() |

Will have to change our Christmas plans. Mrs R's mother celebrated her 91st birthday on Monday. We took her to lunch and had a great day. We were remarking what a marvel she was, living on her own, getting about, cooking, cleaning, no help, going to dancing and various clubs and then, yesterday, at home, she fell and fractured her hip. They are operating now, pinning it. She's perfectly fine, apart from the mobility problem but she ain't gonna be out for Christmas. |

That's really tough luck. Broken hips are no joke at her age. I expect she will be well looked after over Christmas by her family and hospital staff. |

Thanks, we are her family Dai, that's why we need to relocate Christmas from T. Wells to Bexhill-on-Sea. We'll wait till the weekend to see how things are and then replan accordingly. I think she will need three of four weeks to recover properly. Fortunately, with me retiring on Friday, Mrs R and I will have a lot of flexibility. Even for someone as fit as her, it takes longer to recover when you get a bit older. I hope her confidence isn't knocked by it. |

Hi Ticks...Yes Caro comes to mind whenever I come to this forum...thanks for your kind wishes re family and I hope you and yours have a wonderful time...it's a crossover day for me today in that Thea(dora) my grand-daughter has just texted that she and Byron have landed safely at Stansted! My daughter leaves for Greece tomorrow so I'm looking forward to spending this one evening with them...and possibly my daughter's ex although not sure about that! Can't believe it's Christmas on Friday...the year seems to have shot by in some respects...anyway onwards and upwards to the kitchen to prepare some little nibbly things to go with drinks before we go out tonight...for some reason, they all want to go to Chinatown! laughed at the pic of Santa and poor Timmy! Very sorry to hear about Mrs R's mother Rum...hope the op went well and she's recovering and that you have sorted your Christmas holiday plans... My father, who yes is still with us, despite all the odds (as is my 90 year old mother ) had a fall three years ago and needed a "long gamma nailing for a subtrochanteric fracture of the left femur"...he was in hospital for just over two weeks but then spent over a month at the local hospital for recuperation & rehabilitation. He's 91 on Wednesday ...still bedridden with carers coming twice a day to see to his needs and hoist him out of bed for a few hours to sit in a comfy chair...he reads voraciously, watches lots of sport on his telly and is very animated on subjects like Arsenal, fracking and politics in general!...because of this, on my insistence, the local social care services have reinstated physiotherapy and we're looking forward to him being able to make it out to the garden or further afield once plans are put in place for a stairlift & wheelchair...

Yes, sorry to hear about your MiL, rum - hope she makes a good recovery. There are certainly some battlers out there, your Dad being a case in point, Mobs. Rather spookily, it looks as if we also will be hosting an ex on Christmas Day. He's a nice lad, but methinks it might be rather awkward - it will be the first time he and Grace-1 have met since she broke off their relationship. Her previous ex, now married, was here a few weeks ago on courier duty and suggested that we ought to have a dinner for all the Graces' exes - an interesting idea, but not one that we'll be following up. I do hope Caro is well on the road to recovery and that the shock news of Brendon McCullum's impending retirement doesn't occasion a relapse. |

That's not a very merry message despite all the pretty colours, Mobson! Somewhere I read 99 good things about 2016, including better health outcomes for lots of things and peoples. On contra Caro! Under the circumstances of the state of our World... battling terrorism, global warming, political machinations, severe poverty and strife, I think its a pretty good gauge of the current state of affairs, especially when at this time of year we are bombarded with images of perfect lives which bear as little relation to reality as tinsel does to gold!...still there's no need to beat ourselves up today...if you're lucky enough to be with the people you love, warm and safe, with enough to eat, I'm sure you feel as blessed as I do.... So p.s....a message for the UK from Larry the Cat ...Christmas is Christmas! Edited by Mobson, Dec 25 2016, 07:55 AM.

Apart from being my first year of retirement, this is the worst year I can remember. I see that the post war optimism was nothing but a blip and the old order is being restored. I see rationality and truth replaced by a combination of distorted imperial nostalgia and a nasty, vicious, selfish stupidity. I see cynical, self-serving politicians vying with each other to exploit the current mood, rather than work to make it better. I see a news media that is beyond contempt. I hate the present nearly as much as I fear the future.

As my brother says, "Humans are stupid. Humans are mad. Being a human makes me feel sad." It was a very quiet Christmas for Mrs Tickle and I, who were on our own together for the first time, I think, since 1980 - not long after another surprise result in the US presidential election. However, we did have a vision of happiness, which was a joy to see, on Christmas day, when we had a video chat with the Graces 1 and 3. Grace-3 is visiting big sis in Iowa, and the pair of them were clearly enjoying each other's company and having a great time. No such conversation with Grace-2, who is spending Christmas somewhere in the Bolivian jungle, out of range of the internet. However we did talk to her last Friday, and she has sent us 4 songs from a new album she has been recording in La Paz. (The appeal to Persephone for light and guidance through the underworld might be appropriate for these dark times.) She seems to be enjoying life at the moment and is managing to pay for her keep by playing in bars and clubs with a group of itinerant musicians she has teamed up with on her travels - they've even been on a couple of Bolivian radio stations. It's all good experience and should help her development, musical and otherwise, but it will soon be coming to an end: apart from the fact that her days in Bolivia are numbered - she's only allowed to stay for 3 months - she has to be in Chile to help with an educational eco-project in February, and she's booked to fly home from Santiago in early March. It will be nice to see her again. |

I have seen more of the past than most people - I was born during the slump of the early 1930s, lived through the Blitz and the V1 and 2 missiles, National Service, post War austerity and assorted Governments, punctuated by periods of boom and bust. The present political situation is no better or worse than what has gone before. There is no Golden Age to return to. It is futile to adopt the view of Private Frazer from Dad's Army - "We're DOOMED!." Lighten up, Rum - We will muddle through somehow. We always have. Happy New Year everyone. Were are almost on the threshold of another new year, it's like the gravy train has left it's brown residue all over the tracks. With the Corbynistas having seized control of the Labour party and the Tories taking us all to the cliff edge with the whole weight of our humunongous national debts hovering above us. So..... it is now time to rebuild from the bottom up. So bottoms up and a happy new year ! (To all of those who do make it!)

Dai, I had no idea you were that, well, old! Almost 20 years older than me, and I am beginning to think of myself as getting on a bit, or at least as thinking that is what others probably see me as. Here in NZ it is easy enough to be more optimistic, probably because our news media is not as vicious as yours, and we haven't had Brexit or Trump to worry about excessively. John Key had a dream run as PM and now we have another sensible one (though I am not sure Key was particularly sensible, more able to seem to be on the same wavelength as ordinary Kiwis. (Why people were taken in by this I am unsure as he was a multi-millionaire and a stock trader previously). Anyway I wanted sopmewhere to put how we are relaxing today. We have decided to "go" to the races (trots to be exact), at home in front of the television and putting bets on at the computer. Something I only usually do for the Melbourne Cup and the NZ Trotting Cup. We used to go to harness racing almost weekly when we were first married, and perhaps my very favourite job was working at the tote on race days. So I have put on my smart hat (after my husband said my old jersey didn't look very race-dayish) and have waited for my first collect, coming in the 6th race and paying just a little more than I had bet in that race. My husband, on the other hand, bet on the first race and turned his $12 into $140!! |
