Our news is leading with the flooding and deaths in the Solomon Islands. Does this make the news much in Britain? We had a really good long interview this morning with a man from the Red Cross talking about its effects and their work. He talked of having to cross rising rivers where bridges had gone and walking up to their ankles in water all the way to get to their headquarters, with one ghastly incident when they came across people wailing because the bridge had just collapsed with one of their children on it, and they were desperately trying to find him.
Seventeen people dead so far and forty missing, and 10,000 homeless. Apparently there are often natural disasters in the Solomon Islands but flooding doesn't usually affect the capital Honiara. I don't know what the population of the Solomons Is. There is a connection here with them, as we had soldiers in WWII stationed there. And were involved when they had uprisings and trouble a few years ago, but perhaps these things pass by the wider world.

I haven't seen it on the news here, but it could be I missed it. It is covered on the BBC news website, although you have to look hard for it. The Indian cricket is deemed more important.

This would be leading our news - if we weren't expecting The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George to arrive in NZ today, supposing Wellington's weather allows the plane to land. (Actually if we don't use literary licence actually the Malaysian plane black box possibility led the news and I think it might have been followed by the Solomon Islands tragedy, and THEN the tour of the royals.)
