What a dynamic entertainer! He had the youth of Leningrad eating out of his hands. They were a bit restrained at first, but by the end of the concert they were completely overwhelmed. After seventy years of communism, they had tasted freedom.

Looked in on this..."bit restrained" hardly describes their reactions - once the guys got on stage (after Billy Joel was worried if his voice would hold up) and were giving their all, the faces staring fixedly back at them in the audience looked like they were listening to the musical version of Solzhenitsyn's One Day in the Life Of....! :'( They really looked grim and immobile with the exception of one or two who moved to the beat whilst sitting in their chair. Who goes to a concert and puts their head on/in their hands...I couldn't take those reactions so switched over...glad to hear they kinda 'got it' in the end!

Well there's a surprise <whistles>

The programme is being repeated right now on BBC4 (ends at 1.55am) so I caught another snippet - this time Billy Joel's rendition of Ray Charles' Grand Piano, complete with the requisite black shades, and it ain't half bad!

And you are right Dai, the crowd are completely overwhelmed - they are really having a ball - well most of them are!
