Hearing of this major disaster - what a dreadful year Malaysian Airlines are having, and it would appear in both cases nothing to do with the quality of their aircraft - I remembered mentioning to my husband on our trip that we seemed to be over Ukraine and feeling a tiny frisson of doubt about this. Apparently, though, aeroplanes fly high enough over these war areas that there shouldn't be problems. I am listening to a commentator on international affairs at the moment, speaking mainly of totally different things, and he said his nephew was on a flight to Kuala Lumpar just half an hour before this and went over Ukraine. We have heard there were Britons on board and Australians but don't know yet if there were NZers. The Malaysian authorities said the passenger list wasn't available yet, which I found odd - surely the passenger list is sitting there; I suppose they meant is not being released yet. Such a terrible thing to happen, though I suppose people in the Middle East would say their civilians are always getting in the way of bombs and drones and terrorist acts, etc. |

With regard to this latest air tragedy, on a regular flight over a war zone, it has been confirmed that at least 9 Britons were on board the Malaysian airlines flight in which 298 people perished after being shot down by an unidentified surface to air missile...Ukraine have blamed Russian Separatists and vice versa...whoever is responsible, this is yet another horrific incident in our troubled world.

Or rather, apparently not. At 33,000' aeroplanes are well within range of a Buk missile. Edited by waiting4atickle, Jul 18 2014, 10:07 AM.

It's shocking, I'm guessing poorly trained rebels with Russian supplied equipment. Putin's response is typical but feeble. I didn't expect him to take responsibility but he could at least condem it, instead he opted to blame the Ukraine government as being generally responsible for the conflict and therefore responsible for every tragedy associated with it. |

Given Putin's outrageously cynical brutal ruthlessness and calculation, and the way he has been said to be expertly leading the world around by the nose without it knowing ....... look at the effect - to halt military operations out of respect for the enormity of the event ...... which is just what he needed as the Ukrainian forces pressed in on his proxy forces. This allows him to consolidate, reinforce and make territorial arrangements more likely to be permanent and a fait accompli. It is quite likely this was completely deliberate; staged ..... so awful that real purpose is not suspected. Realpolitik ...... what are three hundred lives against the national interests of Russia in Eastern Ukraine? Ingenious creative new horror. Any questions about evil are now irrelevant. ....... and the nerve, the shamelessness ...... to remove, to steal the black boxes. Edited by caissier, Jul 18 2014, 11:07 AM.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/world/europe/10285550/MH17-Family-mourn-young-Kiwi Two Kiwis seemed to be on board this flight - one a New Zealander living in Australia, and one, British (Guildford) born, with parents and a brother also in NZ. As well two well-known Newcastle fans were on their way to NZ where Newcastle and West Ham are playing soon (my husband has flights and a ticket to see West Ham in Wellington). One of them had only missed one Newcastle game since 1973. Wouldn't you think other things (weddings, deaths, family parties) would get in the way occasionally? Worse than Nick Hornsby with Arsenal. The Newcastle team will wear black armbands. |

This morning's images of the dead being lined in black body bags near the crash site with these terrorists standing by, preventing investigators doing their job, is sickening...it is reported that 100 of the bodies are 'stored' in a refrigerated train, destination unknown. I am ashamed to be a human being today...

I was reading a comments thread on Guardian online a couple of days ago which had a lot of interesting posts, some from people with informed aviation knowledge and there is much which can be reasoned or constructively deduced from what's known and is emerging. There were a lot of truly bonkers conspiracy/inventive theories as well. It's so hard to reconcile the different known aspects about what happened; then there's wondering about what it was like for those on board, including families, thinking they were on a routine flight and then heading into a featureless infinity. Hope they were unconscious or dead by then. |
