So, you're pulled up in front of The Beak and this is what happens: German Prosecutors: "We're told that you bribed someone in order to achieve a business deal, and bribery is illegal. What do you say to that?" Bernie Eccelstone: "Well, it's nonsense, of course, but I don't want all my business dealings being rehearsed in these public courts." Germans: "Well, I'm afraid they will be made public in a public trial - unless ... " Eccelstone: "What?" Germans: "Well, you could possibly avoid a trial altogether if you were to make a donation to the German Policeman's Ball ... " Eccelstone: "Oh - that sounds reasonable ... How does £60m sound?" Germans: "That's very generous of you, Mr Ecclestone - it's been a pleasure doing business with you." Why should the rest of us abide by the law ... ? |
