All this week at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, Radio 4 has been broadcasting this year's five single short stories from the BBC National Short Story Award Shortlist 2014...written by Tessa Hadley, Rose Tremain, Francesca Rhydderch, Zadie Smith and Lionel Shriver and read by some of the nation's most popular actresses...Carey Mulligan, Rebecca Hall, Noma Dumezweni, Nancy Crane and Carys Eleri... http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0079gw3 The five 2014 short stories are available to download via podcast which also includes an interview with the author from Radio 4's Front Row at the end of each story. http://www.bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/nssa In 2005, the National Short Story Prize was launched at the Edinburgh International Book Festival to re-establish the importance of the British story after many years of neglect. Funded by NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts) and supported by BBC Radio 4 and Prospect magazine, the prize of £15,000 to the winner became the largest award in the world for a single short story. From 2008, the prize was renamed the BBC National Short Story Award to reflect the fact that the BBC is now the sponsor, currently in partnership with Booktrust...The Award is one of the most prestigious for a single short story, with the winning author receiving £15,000, the runner-up £3,000 and three further shortlisted authors £500 each. The 2014 winner will be announced at an award ceremony at Broadcasting House London next Tuesday, 30th September live on Radio 4's Front Row and streamed live on BBC Arts on September 30th. BBC Radio 4 Extra have also been broadcasting the 2013 five short stories this past week; the winner was Mrs Fox by Sarah Hall; they are all available on i-player....the link also gives details of past years episodes... http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0079gw3/episodes/guide#b03btxrh As the final of the BBC National Short Story Award approaches, the BBC Readings Unit have chosen some of their favourite short stories to listen to again at BBC Arts.
