Dramatisation of the last of the Barchester Chronicles will be broadcast this afternoon in the classic serial spot at 3pm...There are three episodes to look forward to in The Last Chronicle of Barset narrated by Mrs Baxter...I hope for I have loved her voiceover...we find ourselves in the sleepy village of Silverbridge where Henry Grantly has fallen in love again and Mr Crawley is to find that a butcher with a vengeance is someone to be reckoned with.

I've thoroughly enjoyed the Beeb's adaptation of Anthony Trollope's much-loved series of witty, gently satirical stories of provincial life set within the fictional cathedral town of Barchester and the surrounding county of Barsetshire. With a focus on the lives, loves and tribulations of the local clergy and rural gentry, the canvas is broad and colourful, with a wonderful set of iconic characters as they grow up, grow old and fall in or out of love and friendship across the years.

Maggie Steed stars as Mrs Baxter and is joined by Adam Kotz, Tim Pigott-Smith, Samuel Barnett and Scarlett Alice Johnson.

Episode 1: The Way Things Are BBC Radio 4 @ 3pm duration: 1 hour

Uh-oh ..... sorry, I'm in disagreement.

I've liked Trollope on R4 down the years, starting with The Way We Live Now back in 1988 (is it really that long ago??) (yes) and then the fantastic Cherry Cookson adaptations of the 1990s, especially The Warden ..... gorgeous theme and incidental music, so this new version is patchily a disappointment for me, not least for the Hovis-ad, condensed Clary Grundy narration.

BBC drama now has to support a train of approved elements which, I think distract and/or get in the way. There's a listening stress in that I'm not confident some awkward 'wrong' note isn't going to suddenly disrupt the flow - so I find it hard to relax and let the effect happen ..... oh well .............

Ah well I like this new version although I'm not listening as I'm watching the cricket at Headingley right now and there's no disruption of flow or effect there I can tell you! Well except that they're presently at tea! <wink> <cuppa> <cheesecake>
