It doesn't seem that British political figures have learnt a lot from the Profumo affair, or maybe it is so long in the past they have forgotten its lessons. I am stunned by the revelations about Lord Sewel and keep expecting someone to say there has been a big mistake and he is owed a huge apology. But that doesn't seem to be happening. Cocaine, whispering to a prostitute about his allowance, and making snide remarks about Asian girls! I was listening to our radio today with panellists laughing about this, and it made me feel a bit stodgy and judgemental. They were close to admiring him for having life in the old dog, as it were. Not wanting to give way to old age and sitting with his feet up in front of the television. But to me, snorting cocaine (perhaps it's the word snorting that bothers me) is not dignified, and commenting mockingly about his allowance and paying for sex is the height of hypocrisy and bad behaviour in someone who is trying to instill better ethics into Parliament. I sometimes think the British public is too damning and critical of their politicians but if this is an example of what they do, it is no wonder. How is the British public taking this? Are they outraged or amused? Angry or resigned? |

He seems to have been set up by The Sun. No excuse for him but I hate the way the tabloids operate. I imagine there are a lot worse in House of Lords and, indeed, in 'big business', which we are all supposed to worship now. Nothing new about this: who remembers Lords Lambton and Jellicoe? |

The only illegal thing he did it seems is had some cocaine; Kate Moss did that ...... stupid though in his position to risk everything for a bit of private naughtiness; maybe it goes with that life somehow. No mention of the fact that he was set-up, or how, for ridicule and ruin and newspaper sales. His family has to deal with it as well. He did unknowingly get some retaliation comments in at the same time though. " How is the British public taking this? Are they outraged or amused? Angry or resigned? " Not very bothered, I should think, Caro, apart from his crowing that his £200 / day House of Lords allowance was paying for his shenanigans, but he likely has other income so that's not altogether the case. Just more discrediting of politicians. The worst thing is probably the orange bra ........ Edited by caissier, Jul 28 2015, 02:25 PM.
