Grace-2 has finally put some of her songs on Youtube. If anyone fancies bumping up her viewing figures please do so. You can find them by searching for Clara Dawn, but here's a link to one of them - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z-V3Indz0nY

Lovely lot of songs, thanks. I liked the huskiness of her voice in Hey There Stranger - it sounded different from the others somehow. She would go down well with our historical society - we have the occasional singer/song-writer to entertain us, and that style would appeal.

Thanks, Caro. Glad you liked them. She is developing quite a vocal range, probably as a result of all the busking.

Jings Tick, I never saw that coming :)

Only heard 'The cage I made' so far but will certainly give the rest a listen on the basis of that. It doesn't really sound like anybody else I can think of , what an interesting song that is.

Thanks, Rum, all feedback much appreciated. The Cage I Made is certainly interesting. In many ways I prefer the original raw version, which I think packs a bit more power, but the CD version is pretty good as well - in my completely unbiased opinion.

Does she play everything Tick? Guitar, violin, harmonica?

Everything, including Irish whistle, except for the cajon, which is played on about 5 of the tracks by her cousin. A friend of hers, who helped with the arrangements on some of the songs, was supposed to play guitar, but let her down at the last minute. She nearly abandoned the project as a result of that, but decided to do it herself. He's an ex-friend now.

She has a studio booked in Wigan Saturday thru Tuesday to record her next one. (Her cousin, who will doing the percussion again, lives in Bolton.) I think Grace-3 is going up there on Monday or Tuesday to do some backing vocals, which she did on one of those tracks as well.

It's a great thing to do, you have to get it out there.

I am involved in a different sort of creative endeavour at the moment. I've written a couple of plays but that's a harder thing to get off the ground. The first one was quite short and I think would make a good radio play, the other is still at an early draft stage. It's very satisfying to do. To be honest, I am more interested in the writing than in doing anything with them. I've also penned a couple of sonnets but poetry isn't really my thing, I just thought I would give it a go.

I send my stuff to a guy I know, who is a published poet/novelist and he has been very complimentary but It's nowhere near the sort of quality that Wu does, I'm in awe of him but still giving it a go.

Good luck with the writing, Rum. I guess you'll be able to devote a bit more time and energy to it once you've retired.

I think Grace-2 is more interested in making the CDs than in doing anything with them - and it's quite an expensive hobby for someone in her position. I daresay she sells a few copies when she's busking, but I doubt she'll recoup her costs.

Listened now...your Grace has a subtle voice suited exactly to the style of songs she is singing...of course she has...she's composing them...I do like the songs she sings in French ...her voice seems to relax and handle the lyrics well; especially like hearing the break and the occasional rasp in her voice in some of the songs...it gives them another dimension. <rose>

Yes, I rather like the French songs. They're different in origin, of course. As a condition of having a permit in Switzerland, she is required to have French lessons. It's largely a case of going through the motions, but she was asked to write an essay and wrote a song instead - hence "Mots". And "Reviens" is the result of her association with a sustainable farming enterprise: the owner does a lot of presentations and courses and such, and she sometimes provides entertainment at these. He asked if she could write a song for one of these and that was what she came up with. "La Pomme", I think was just her first attempt to write a song in French. The songs in English spring, more or less unbidden, from her internal landscape.

So, the second CD is done (or third if you count the album of S American folk songs she recorded with her Chilean friend). I would say it's an improvement on the last, but it's all subjective. She has introduced a few more instruments, such as accordion and glockenspiel, and there are quite a few songs - 6 or 7 out of 13 - that I hadn't heard before. I'll let you know if/when it becomes available on Youtube.

It's good to hear Tick, she sounds full of enthusiasm, which is brilliant: it's so easy to get dispirited.

Yes, Rum, she has plenty of enthusiasm, especially when it comes to music and "sustainable living" but, being perhaps overly sensitive, she does get down sometimes - she could hardly have written "The Cage I Made" otherwise. Trouble is, she doesn't really know what to do with her life. Mind you, nor do I. Her latest idea is a career in music and movement therapy. But she's planning to go travelling in South America (again) as of November, after finishing a 2 month stint as a housekeeper. Mrs Tickle is none too pleased about that as, quite apart from the worry, it means we won't see her for a year or more. I'm not really into worrying about things beyond my control, but I think it's a shame because she had the chance of being the singer for a blues band and I think that would have been a great experience for her. Grace-2's a bit sad about that, too.

We had a nice family conference on Skype today (Mothers Day). Grace-1 is still busy with her PhD studies in Iowa - and hoping to get funding to attend a congress in South Africa - while Grace-2 is doing a meditational yoga course in Ecuador, with a view to a career as a yoga instructor. She's still doing lots of musical activities, of course, and apparently her second album, Cutting the Cord is now available to listen to - and buy - on bandcamp.com. There are some nice tracks on it so it's well worth a listen - https://claradawn.bandcamp.com/album/cutting-the-cord

Some friends of mine (the son of an old friend and his wife) are in a band called 'Universal Thee'. Their second Album 'All watched over by machines of loving grace' (named after a poem) has a bit of a Big Star/Alex Chilton vibe and is as good a piece of jangly guitar pop as you'll hear this side of Teenage Fan Club. Interesting lyrics too. The link below explains their shtick. It great to see young people having a go. Good luck to Grace with the album.

They sound interesting, Rum. I like the album notes - although I'm not sure about the grammar. Thought that song was going to be about Betty Boothroyd.

The new single 'Keep Falling' is my favourite, 'Speaker' is a bit repetitive and quirky for an auld yin like me

Here's the poem by US poet Richard Brautigan

All Watched Over by Machines of Loving Grace

I like to think (and
the sooner the better!)
of a cybernetic meadow
where mammals and computers
live together in mutually
programming harmony
like pure water
touching clear sky.

I like to think
(right now, please!)
of a cybernetic forest
filled with pines and electronics
where deer stroll peacefully
past computers
as if they were flowers
with spinning blossoms.

I like to think
(it has to be!)
of a cybernetic ecology
where we are free of our labors
and joined back to nature,
returned to our mammal
brothers and sisters,
and all watched over
by machines of loving grace.

I can never resist parody :)

I like to think (and
the sooner the better!)
of a `Moon Under The Water`
where poets and their good friends
meet together in mutually
delightful company
like cold lager
touching dry throats.

I like to think
(right now, please!)
of an appetising menu
filled with pies and fat sausages
where staff stroll helpfully
past your table
as if they were Moses
with the condiments.

I like to think
(it has to be!)
of a stimulating environment
where we are free of our labours
comfortably ensconced
chomping on our mammal
brothers and sisters
and then all washed down
with glasses of lovely beer

It's often the case that the parody outlives the original. Now be off, or I'll kick you downstairs. <laugh>

It's only Grace-2 who is really exotic, Rum. Grace-3 has even decided to stay at home and do a degree at Reading University - which I must say I think is a mistake, but what do I know?

Grace-1 likes to travel, it's true and is well on the way to visiting every state, but her lifestyle is not so unconventional.

Grace-2, on the other hand, is now in Peru, after spending a couple of weeks in Colombia and a couple of months in Ecuador, where she did an intensive yoga teacher training course - so she is now a Yogi! She also spent some time on a farm, but there wasn't much work for her to do, so she ended up helping out at the local school. I'm not sure quite what help she provided, but she seems to have got the kids performing some music - and sent us some audio files to prove it. Now she's in Peru and said in her latest email, "I'm still in Chachapoyas and camping on the roof of a hostel and I've met a Chilean musician with whom I'm playing on the street and in the restaurants." She also sent a couple of demo tracks of the two of them playing, which are rather good (if you like that kind of thing). I expect they'll be taking the S American charts by storm very soon. <laugh>

After Peru, it must be Bolivia - next week it's Chile. Grace-2 has been knocking around with a few other itinerant musicians for the past several weeks, playing in clubs and bars. She has enjoyed the music, but doesn't really like big cities or smoky bars and the time has come to move on. For one thing, her Bolivian visa expires next week; for another, she has an eco-project to attend to in Chile next month. And then she's coming home! She has been working on a new album in La Paz: it isn't 100% finished, but she's put it on Bandcamp anyway -

https://claradawn.bandcamp.com/album/the-line

Grace-1 didn't make it to South Africa - I guess she didn't get the funding. Still, she's in Hawaii at the moment (30th birthday jaunt with the boyfriend) and waiting to hear if she's got a place on an Antarctic expedition next year.

Grace-3 is still at home, although not at university. Mind you, she totted up 8 trips overseas last year and is off to Cuba in a couple of weeks, so we don't see much of her.

What globe-trotters your girls are, Tickle! But young people now do travel a lot, don't they? We felt very adventurous going on honeymoon to Western Europe via Eurail trains. Mind you that was in the days of no cell-phones etc, so we didn't have any contact with people we knew for six weeks. Any mail we were sent was held at NZ House in London.

I will listen to Grace 2 on youtube later.

I thought Antipodeans were the biggest globetrotters of all, Caro - or is that just Australians? In my travelling days you couldn't go anywhere without bumping into an Aussie and the occasional Kiwi, and most of my Australian acquaintances seem to spend their life roaming the world.

I was right: going to Reading Uni was a mistake - Grace-3 packed it in halfway through the first term. I'm not sure what she's going to do next. I think she's hoping to work on cruise ships as a personal trainer - it would certainly be nice if she could put her diploma to good use. For the moment, though, she's in Colombia. She's supposed to be spending 4 months travelling in S America, but I suspect she's going to be spending more time than originally planned in Colombia - she seems to have taken quite a fancy to a young man there that she's been grooming on the phone for months. <laugh> Makes sense, I suppose - she can stay with his family and save on rent. Mind you, she has to hide her tattoos.

Grace-2 is back in Ecuador for a few months, teaching and studying at the yoga retreat. There's a male interest there, as well - the man she thinks she might marry one day lives just across the road. She's been trying to persuade us that we ought to emigrate there. The way this county's going, it might not be a bad idea.

Grace-1 is still doing her PhD in Ames, Iowa. I'm not sure how much longer she can drag that out.
