Caro

Hello All,

I won't be here for the next week. We are away for our first holiday since my stroke. Going to Wanaka - a beautiful place in Central Otago - for a week in a timeshare. The autumn colours should be wonderful at this time of year.

Cheers.

Yes, I second that! Hope you have a wonderful time...certainly sounds like a lovely place to visit...

Wanaka, a resort town on New Zealand's South Island, is set on the southern end of its namesake Lake with views of snowcapped mountains. It's the gateway to the Southern Alps' Mount Aspiring National Park, a wilderness of glaciers, beech forests and alpine lakes. Treble Cone and Cardrona ski resorts are near the park. Just outside the town is the outdoor maze and sculpture gallery of Puzzling World. http://www.lakewanaka.co.nz

Thanks for the good wishes. As you have probably seen I am back. We had a good time in Wanaka - my sister had her retirement party (for her 65th birthday which was actually three months ago!) while we were there coincidentally and my cousins who are good value were there, as well as her five children and their partners and children. We had a "supper" of a whole salmon, prawns, a large round of Brie cheese courtesy of my niece who works for Fonterra, raw oysters. We were to have toheroa which are a large seafood that you gather from beaches. I used to love going toheroaing when I was young, but now the season is very restricted and free access is only about every 5 years. Maori have rights to them and if you are having a special occasion apparently they will give you a licence to take them. One of my sister's sons in law has some Maori blood and he was going to get some but couldn't find them where he went. So no toheroa to my great disappointment.

As well as that we went to a movie in a tiny theatre there (Ruby's) and saw 45 Years. Good but not for those who like a lot of action in the movies. And out for dinner several times - to Lone Star with friends who happened to be staying at the same complex as us. And once to a place with very good French food at expensive prices. And one afternoon to a very nice lunch place with wonderful views of the flat-topped snow-capped mountains. Good week, but not enough time for reading, or watching videos, though we did see The Dressmaker on the unit's television.

Glad to hear you had a good time despite the absence of toheroa, Caro.

Mrs Tickle and I have just returned from a break in Scotland, an inspired venture given the weather further south. We had a couple of nights in Bolton, staying with Mrs T's cousin, on the way there and a night in Pudsey visiting friends on the way back. We also stopped off for Sunday lunch with friends in Nottingham yesterday. Apart from a couple of hours last Monday evening, it was pretty much wall-to-wall sunshine.

Did you mean what part of Scotland, Mobs?

We actually started with a couple of nights in Bolton, Lancashire, visiting some of Mrs Tickle's cousins, then drove up to Loch Lomond, where we stayed for a couple of nights on the eastern shore - about half-way between Balmaha and Rowardennan, if you know the area. After that, we headed up to Pitlochry for a night, before spending a couple of nights in Edinburgh. On the way back we spent a night with some friends in Pudsey and then stopped off for a late Sunday lunch with friends in Nottingham. Quite an agreeable trip.

Scotland is a big place, we only scratched the surface. How long are you planning to go for? Do you need anyone to carry your bags?

Sounds great Tick, I know Scotland pretty well. We used to take my mum and dad off for a few days to different parts when we visited them, so we've been all over. Edinburgh is just over the bridge from Fife, where I'm from and I lived there for six months or so. I lived in Glasgow for a few months too and spent four years on the Stirling University campus, while I did my degree.

Hope you have fun. I've never been to Spain (unless you count Tenerife) apart from a day trip to San Sebastian (from Pays Basque).

I love San Sebastian, Basque country. We've been all over Spain but this was just a wee 'city break'. Did Malaga last year, which was surprisingly good: hope this is the same. The MiL is in a care home, transferred from hospital on Tuesday. When we get back, we will take her home.
