I suppose this is big news in Britain; here it was told to us near the end of the news, after the road accidents, white flight from schools, crimes, sporting news, etc. Any speculation about why so soon after the Brexit vote? I mean what speculation; there is sure to be ooddles, the British papers being what they are.

There is no doubt that the referendum was a gamble too far. Cameron probably felt that his campaign to keep Scotland as part of the U.K had been a success, and that the Remain arguments would prevail.
He probably feels now that he has shot his bolt, and has nothing further to offer the country.

Unfortunately, one wonders if the Brexiteers have got the ability to achieve anything like the results that they forecast.

Matthew Parris commentating on things British on our radio yesterday suggested that David Cameron had resigned because Theresa May had radically different views from his, and he thought it best to resign rather than destabilise her, or being thought to be doing that. They talked about her wanting to go back to grammar schools, and he was strongly opposed to that. I don't know if you will be able to access this but it might be here: http://www.radionz.co.nz/national/programmes/ninetonoon/audio/201816251/uk-correspondent-matthew-parris

More likely he knew what was coming on Libya, but he was never going to stay as a backbencher. His only interest in politics was personal ambition, he believes in nothing in particular and would say and do almost anything to stay as PM, as his mad, reckless brexit gamble demonstrated. Now he is no longer PM, he has no interest in 'public service'.
