Sudden resignation of NZ's PM

New Zealand's very popular PM, John Key, has stunned the nation by suddenly resigning. No notice at all. He said he had never intended to make this a lifetime job, and he owed it to his family, especially his wife, to give them some time. He didn't want a fourth term (our elections take place every 3 years) and felt it wasn't fair to campaign as if he was. It's the only news in town, well in the whole country, since we heard just before 1pm. He's even chosen his successor, Bill English. Though they will probably have a vote on that later. He's been Deputy PM, and Finance Minister.

I didn't hold him in total admiration, him being National (Tory) and me being left-wing. But he did have a very personable style, and we don't have the same unpleasant media that the British do, so although his casualness did get him into trouble on occasions (Ponygate, I suppose was the main one, where a waitress complained that he pulled her ponytail without her permission) it didn't do him lasting damage. Nothing seemed to, so he was referred sometimes as the Teflon man.

I always ask permission before pulling someone's ponytail.
