Tomorrow we are off to Christchurch for a few days, back on Monday. My husband's brother has sold his house and gone into a retirement village which he likes (so far) very much and seems to have lots of facilities, so we are off to see it. And my son and family are also shifting near Christchurch and we will see where they are going to build. I have spent an hour of the afternoon looking for eating out places. We usually go where my brother-in-law likes but he is fussy and doesn't want noise or children or anywhere expensive (though he is quite well-off) or anything that is not Italian or pub food or fish-oriented. So this time we are choosing and he can come with us or not as he pleases. I have had to choose clothes - it has been cold here, mostly, but the forecast seems to be saying it will be hot in CHCH, so I am trying to take a variety of clothes without stuffing the suitcase with useless ones. Not easy, and then there's the question of what books to take. I am reading Huckleberry Finn for our bookclub, so that is going, and then I am also reading a Wodehouse book of short stories, also a Maeve Binchy short story collection. They are both a bit similar being based round Christmas time mostly, and both light and warm-hearted. Wodehouse is a better writer that Binchy, but it would have been better to have finished one and then started the other. So I am leaving the Binchy behind and taking instead a non-fiction NZ book about a woman checking out her Italian ancestors. The blurb seems to indicate that it won't necessarily be a happy book. And then I am half-way through a book of NZ poems. So that should keep me going. Then in March we are off to Wanaka again for a week, so I won't be round then either. Home for about three weeks first. |

Nope! Afraid not, the only other board I saw him active on was the BBC Point of View messageboards, where I also saw Becky post occasionally...but that closed down at the end of last June. He does seem to have stepped back here for some reason. I do have a personal email address for him if we want to ask him any questions. I would add that a couple of weeks back I found I was logged out on my iPad and as I was away couldn't remember the exact password to re-loggin so I requested a new one..I did receive an automated email from here asking me to give a new password but in the meantime I remembered my original so it was not necessary to carry out the procedure. I have a list of my passwords which I keep both at home and in my bag, which is probably frowned on officially, but too bad. I do hope we don't lose you, Rum, as I very much enjoy your posts. How do you get these personal email addresses, Mobson? I have addresses for the other three boards I belong to, but don't know anyone from this board either by name or email address. |

Well as far as Cassier is concerned, I made personal connection him after I left Hyperstar's forum which he formed with the closure of the official BBC message boards, where he enticed many regulars of the BBC m/bs to migrate. After a series of dramas, and before it eventually closed down, Cassier and I decided to set up this forum which we hoped would be run along the lines of the original BBC forums; we obviously needed to communicate with each other whilst in the process of doing that...I also needed to contact people to let them know about the new board and invite them to come join us, which meant pm'ing them initially to get their private emails before H's board closed down. After contact, many said they were interested and this forum became live for posting on 15th June 2011. Cassier was/is Admin...I became 'No. 2 member'...Becky (no.3) and Rum (no.4) were privy to the original set-up so we knew each other's identity; we were pleased with the number of people joining ...Ticks and you Caro joined on 11th July as members no. 12 & 15 respectively...when Norm agreed to join on 15th July I was really pleased because I remember he really took some persuading in several emails after his experiences on Hyper's forum...but I assured him he would be in 'safe hands'...and he was! Bless him! Rikkiboy joined on 19th July 2011 when we had 35 members...our board statistics state that there are 122 members but alas we've 'lost' quite a few over the past six years...including it seems our Administrator!

I don't know why but yesterday I could get to my post asking for someone's address but it didn't go further than that - mind you I could only get there via search. Today we sorted out our anti-virus, and that seems to have fixed whatever was wrong, not that it affected any of the other boards I go to, or anything else. Just this board. I will now write your email address in my address book. Immediately. Thanks for that. |

It was probably pretty hot in Valencia too. Tickle, we spent a week in Llandudno in 1980 with our oldest son then nearly 3. (Just turned 40 now!) We had gone to so many places that Rod would say, 'What howtow are we going to this night?' So it was good to be able to stay in the same place for a week, on the seafront where I could take him down to the beach for a play in the sand every day while my husband looked around. I do seem to remember the hotel manager complaining about the chatter of my young son being too loud. I felt duly offended, but he may have had complaints from other residents. I think he was quite a well-behaved child; they would have had more complaints with my second son! |

How awful, rumbaba. Do you mean today or earlier? Can you walk at all? I don't know what the treatment is for a broken ankle - do they leave it to heal itself or bandage it heavily or put a cast on it? (I learnt that 'cast' in northern Britain is often called a "pot" when my grandson broke his arm just before they were due to come to NZ.) |

Metal plate to my fractured tibia and a cast. There is ligament damage, my foot was at right angles to my leg. Just waiting to go to theatre. I'll be six weeks in a cast, all being well. A year before I will be back to 'normal' but it may never be. |

Oh, dear! Rum, that's terrible. Much sympathy from me. And just a little empathy, as I'm almost crippled myself, having done something to my clutch leg driving to and from and around N Wales. Not entirely sure what the problem is, possibly hamstring trouble - I'm certainly hamstrung at the moment. |

Thanks for the good wishes, folks. Saw the doc this morning, who "diagnosed" swelling in the popliteal fossa. Not really a diagnosis at all, tbh, since a swelling there, i.e. behind the knee, can be caused by a number of things. He did discount DVT and also, if only implicitly, an aneurysm, but didn't really elaborate on the likely cause. Nor did he suggest anything I might do about it, other than resting and taking plenty of Ibuprofen. I may get to see more of Wimbledon than I anticipated - if I don't keep falling asleep on the sofa. Ooooh you are wicked ticks! I spent most of yesterday with my mother at the local hospital where we had appointments in two different departments with a rather long wait in between and with the cafe recently closed (budget cuts) where's the W.I? Whilst waiting around and more attentive than usual, never have I seen so many men alimping!!!! They came hobbling into reception, one man in obvious agony saying he had injured himself on Sunday...hamstring? Anyway off he went for a x-ray...a builder brought his workmate in after an iron bar had fallen on his ankle and foot...several men were walking with the aid of a cane or crutches...the only exception was a young girl accompanied by her mother who had a sports injury at school... We go to doctors regularly and my husband is sure most of the time they are just guessing. He has arthriticky shoulders and they prescribe different medications and treatments, dependent on which doctor or surgeon we get. And why is there no treatment for chillblains? He has had dreadful chillblains this year and last (and all through his life at times) but even the podiatrist that I went to last week, when asked about them briefly, said there was no treatment. I feel very sorry for people suffering pain, but if you want an illness that is virtually painless, have a stroke! When I complained about discomfort or pain in the rehabilitation clinic they would ask to rate it on a scale of 1 - 10. When I said I didn't know how to do that as I know other people have far more pain than I did, they would say "It's how you feel." I knew perfectly well that my pain would only a 2 or 3, but for me any pain or discomfort needs to be got rid of (I would prefer 'gotten' here, but my husband complains about that word). I can't imagine what the pain of cancer must be like, if medical cannabis is the only relief (and that's still not legal here, though people seem to access it easily enough and there are measures in hand to legalise or decriminalise it). So my very big sympathy for you both. |

The toes on my bad foot are turning an alarming mixture of yellow/purple. I phoned my GP, who told me not to worry about it: just bruising that can come out some days after the trauma. The trouble is that, due to having my leg elevated, I am looking at my toes all day long and am acutely aware of the dramatic change. |

Got the stitches out today and have been given a 'spaceboot'. I can take it off (if my leg is elevated) and should exercise my ankle, which is very stiff. It's a weird thing, with an inbuilt pump, which I have to inflate when I have it on. I can take it off in bed but, if I get up in the night for the loo, I have to put it on, to keep my ankle supported. Got this for four weeks. |

Well these events all sound very difficult and painful, but at least you can see an end to them. I don't have any real pain after my stroke but I have to wear a splint from my foot to just below my knee day and night. I don't see an end to this, my right foot having been damaged by the stroke. My right side generally was affected, but I have generally got the use of my right hand back though not totally, and it does get a bit sore if I use it too much. The right arm more so, though I can now reach out much more than when I first came home. But I think my foot is permanently unable to work properly. I can put some weight onto it with my day splint but the night splint I can only walk briefly. Sorry, all that sounds a bit self-pitying, and I would hate to have pain like you and Tickle have. |

I don't really have any pain, Caro and, as you say, it's only temporary (I hope): you have it much harder. I went out today, first time since I broke my ankle (except for one trip to hospital). Mrs R drove me to a nearby country pub, with good disabled facilities. We had a really nice lunch and I had a lovely pint of Long Man best bitter, local Sussex beer.

Glad to hear you're pain-free and have a spaceboot, Rum - you'll soon be walking on the moon. Sadly, I'm far from being pain-free and am struggling to cope at the moment: everything is a big effort, including using my pooter - which is why my posts here have been very infrequent of late. Had an x-ray last week and now being referred for physio. If that doesn't do the trick, they may try a steroid injection in my knee - ultimately I may need a knee replacement (or 2). Oh, the joy! That's very distressing, Tickle. I've known people who have had new knees, and it seems to work all right, but they usually walk a bit slowly afterwards or with some difficulty. They can still do quite physical work, though, and they are probably older than you, so their recovery rate might be slower. I'm very sorry for people in pain - I hate it, even when it is minor. My husband is probably going to have to have a shoulder operation - he has arthritis and is in quite a lot of pain at night. That will necessitate no driving for 6 weeks and then no lifting for a time after that. He has to lift my leg in and out the car and needs to help me into bed, so we are not sure how that will go. I am happy enough inside at home and other people can get me into their cars, but he gets a bit stir crazy and doesn't like to ask others who are not family for help. Silly man. Maybe in a while you will be able to use the computer more. Hope so if only from our point of view! I still get a bit sore in my right arm when I use it too much so can't type a lot, but it is getting easier. Best Wishes, Caro. Edited by Caro, Aug 2 2017, 10:20 PM.

Thanks, Caro - and my sympathy to your OH. Grace-3 had quite a job getting me into and out of her car yesterday when she took me to the doctor's. Quite funny in a way, but rather sad. As far as I'm aware, knee replacements are generally quite successful, but probably involve a lot of pain - I'm not very good with that, either, especially when you have to force yourself through it. There's a lady across the road from us who has had both knees replaced in the last year or two, and she seems to be getting along pretty well. (She's in her 70s now, I guess.) And apparently our next door neighbour had a knee replacement about 16 years ago. I wasn't aware of that - or had forgotten. She has all sorts of health problems now and her husband, Lazarus, who is her main carer, was taken into hospital last week. Mrs Tickle has been round to see her a few times this week, which is when the information about her having had a knee replacement came to light. I must see if I can hobble round for a chat sometime. Hope you get a visit from the Muse soon, Rum. I was wondering about a reworking of an old Hot Chocolate number - (will you turn on) You Poxy Thing. |

Hopefully you are a lot more independent now, Rum, and feeling a bit less frustrated. No such luck for me, as my condition is no better, and possibly slightly worse, than it was a month ago. My first physio appointment is scheduled for next Friday - maybe there will be some improvement after that. Apart from the day-to-day frustration of being almost completely useless, there is the added and considerable disappointment that I will not be away for a few days next week (and the week after that). I was really looking forward to our planned two-centre holiday in Switzerland (visiting not only Grace-2 but also my brother and his extended family, including our newest great-niece, whom we've yet to meet) and the Dordogne (staying with Mrs T's favourite cousin at her new holiday home). I would so love to see the place where Grace-2 is living now - it sounds really interesting - and to make use of the swimming pool at coz's place - a bit of aqua therapy would do me the world of good. Heigh-ho. I tried to persuade Mrs Tickle that she should go without me - she needs a break even more than I do - but she was very resistant to the idea. However, she has finally agreed to do the Dordogne half of the trip, probably won over by the entreaties of her cousin, with whom she has always been very close. It's a shame she's not going to Switzerland, though - my brother is desperate for a fresh supply of HP sauce. One bright spot on the horizon is that Grace-2 is planning to come over here later in the year and record 2 new albums, including one of Edith Piaf songs. I'm looking forward to hearing those and have decided to postpone my Dignitas appointment. ![]() |

A sense of humour, always useful, is even more important when you find yourself incapacitated. I am making progess with walking. I have an exercise programme, from the physio, which is helping to make my left leg stronger and increase the flexibility in my ankle. I don't feel so vulnerable out on my own now, walking with one crutch. |

Yes. My kids tell me to be braver and not worry about falling, but I have never been very brave, even as a child. I always feared falling and have never, touch wood, broken any bone. But now I am very fearful of falling, because it would just set me back and be a greater burden on my husband. I have a four-pronged stick which makes me feel less vulnerable, but I am practicing with a one-pronged stick because that would be easier on sloping ground or uneven surfaces, but I do feel much less secure. So I understand your feelings, rumbaba. But good to hear you are improving. Now let's hope for Tickle getting better. |

However bad we are all feeling (and now my husband has had to have a shoulder operation following a torn rotator cuff and can't drive for 6 weeks, which frustrates him a lot) it doesn't really compare to what my young neighbour and carer goes through. She has a son who can't really walk with spina bifida, her niece died of cancer, aged 14, her brother-in-law had a forestry accident not long ago, her ball partner of some years ago died of cancer, aged 34, her daughter is bi-polar, her other son's flatmate died in a car accident a year or two ago. And when we had a day in Dunedin recently my husband remarked jokingly, "I wonder what disaster will happen to A today." Then we heard from the care providers that she wouldn't be available for care when we got home because her daughter had been taken to hospital by ambulance. We thought they must have made a mistake and it would be her son, who often has operations to keep him going. But no, it was her daughter - she had collapsed at school. It almost sounded like a stroke, but I now gather it's not so serious, though I think she is still in hospital some days later. It's no wonder A has high blood pressure which worries her a bit. And those are only a selection of the dramas she tells us about. They don't include the deaths of some of the people she has cared for in her job. |

I will be away from tomorrow morning till about Tuesday evening, or Wednesday. We are off up to Christchurch, a five plus hour drive from where we live. Our son lives near there with his wife and two little boys. So see you all when I get back. Cheers, Caro. |
