Back home after our adventures at the Cheltenham jazz festival. There was a big fight at the free stage last night during the 'Thill Collins' (sic) gig. It was really packed and two lassies started brawling, sending one poor chap into a bunch of people, one of whom reacted by punching him in the face: then it was like a brawl in a comedy film.

Saw Booker T Jones last night, who put on a good show. The night before was a dreadful gig least said the better and on Thursday Dee Dee Bridgewater fronted a Memphis soul band to good effect, eschewing her normal jazz quartet and standards set.

You could at least have said who they were, rumbaba! (Not that I would know them of course, but others might or at least might then know to avoid them.) Sounds a good weekend, though I am a little surprised at brawling at a jazz festival.

The duff gig was weird. Mrs R and I have seen Seb Rochford with various people, including a trio with Andy Sheppard a couple of years ago at Cheltenham. Mrs R hates drum solos but Seb is a very 'musical' drummer and she likes him. For this gig, he had some virtuoso US flautist and a double bass player (complete with bow). There was no stage lighting, apart from the little strip lights above the music stands. At one point,  for about 15 minutes, it was like sitting in the dark listening to the fridge humming. When something did happen, it was like incidental music from the world's dullest film. It was a single piece that lasted 50 minutes; there was no intro or explanation, we weren't even told what it was called, never mind what it was about. There was wild applause at the end but I know what that was, relief clapping, 'thank Christ it's over, hurrah!' .

Glad you're still enjoying your jazz, Rum.
I know yer man Seb from two nice outfits - Polar Bear and Acoustic Ladyland.
Got some good records and memories of good gigs.

(Acoustic Ladyland is a nice pun on Hendrix's "Electric Ladyland" - but not quite as witty as the lovely Kirsty MacColl's "Electric Landlady" LP.)

Do you know the group The Comet Is Coming? Enjoyed a great set by them in Dublin last week. The DJ knew what jazz / hip-hop to mix in with their groove.
