There have been a lot of disasters in the world at the moment, though not terrorist-inspired. Apart from the London fire there have been a petrol explosion in Pakistan killing more than 150 people when they rushed to fill up cans when a tanker overturned and then exploded, fires in Portugal killing nearly 80 people, a landslide in China killing almost 100, and now a tourist boat carrying 150 people sinking in Colombia with 9 dead. These things do seem to come in cycles. |

Not sure who's riding the cycle now, Caro, but he or she seems to be in top gear. |

I was thinking of adding recent earthquakes and floods and cyclones to this thread. Don't know where to start - we probably hear more about the cyclones hitting places like the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico than you do over in Europe; they seem to be close to wiping out altogether some of the smaller islands. But the Mexican earthquake sounds quite dreadful and the death toll is doubtless going to rise further yet. I gather that the teacher who was found alive had been hiding under a table or some such construction: that is what we here in NZ are taught to do in an earthquake, but sometimes people overseas seem to be taught different strategies. Maybe it is because most of our house are wood-framed, and often made fully of timber with iron roofs. Timbersteel is what seems to be used now mostly. |
