Some of you, maybe Rumbaba especially, may not consider this music but Ed Sheeran is coming to Dunedin and putting on three concerts at the Forsyth Barr stadium. This has put Dunedin (110kms or about 70 miles from where I live) into a spin. Nothing like this has happened before. There is a Ed Sheeran big mural put up somewhere, the council has put over $4000 into a painting which has caused some controversy, and accommodation will be at a premium and food places are looking forward with glee. There are signs saying Paint the Town Ed, and other such things. It is a VERY BIG DEAL here. We would like to go to Dunedin then for the French Film Festival but think the parking will be horrendous at Easter weekend. They even brought in Easter Sunday trading partly because so many people were going to be in the city then for the concert. I had never even heard of him before this, although I take very little notice of pop music these days, though once it was the centre of my life. I only hear what is played on National Radio, which tends to be more experimental or NZ music. Or my CDs of 60s music, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Queen, Beatles, etc. But my sister and her husband are going as are my son and daughter-in-law. They are coming on 3 hour and 5 hour trips respectively, from different directions. I have tried to listen to some of his music, but don't quite see what is so special about it. I would quite like to see more music shows, but my husband is not very interested, and since my style of music tends to the very bland and I would quite like to see Foster and Allen when they come soon, I think Rumbaba etc won't be impressed. I expect they are getting a bit past it and I have seen them before years ago. |

I like Ed Sheeran and his music as does my 13 year old god-daughter Ella and so for her 14th birthday I've bought tickets to go see him in June at Wembley Stadium! He's huge in the contemporary music business as an English singer, songwriter, guitarist, record producer and actor!...he's been in the Simpsons for goodness sake and Games of Thrones. The tartan shirt that he wore in a cameo in Bridget Jones Baby (which I watched on sky cinema last week) was auctioned online to raise funds for East Anglia's Children Hospice for which he is an ambassador. He is a supporter of several charities especially musical events...he says he cares about all classes, races and generations; "that's how I was brought up – we need more people that care about everyone." Sheeran was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to music and charity. He received the award from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace on 7th December 2017. At the end of last year, he was named most-streamed artist on Spotify in 2017. He's also the only act to date to have two singles become the most streamed on the platform, with "Thinking Out Loud" and "Shape of You". Spotify revealed Ed Sheeran as the most streamed artist of 2017 globally, and he remains the #1 most streamed artist on Spotify with 47 million monthly listeners. Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide) was the most streamed album of the year worldwide with 3.1 billion streams, and ‘Shape of You’ became the most streamed track of all time on Spotify, now with over 1.4 billion streams. “Ed Sheeran absolutely dominated this year with the release of his record-breaking album, Divide,” said Stefan Blom, Spotify’s Chief Content Officer. “There is no doubt that 2017 was The Year of Ed Sheeran, and we are thrilled that so many millions of music fans have discovered, listened to, and shared his music on Spotify. Congratulations to Ed on an amazing achievement.” Addressing Caro's post...in Monday's Guardian music section, the headline was "New Zealand city in an Easter 'kerfuffle' over Ed Sheeran...Dunedin is divided over a mural of the singer and special licences to serve alcohol over Easter full article in link... https://www.theguardian.com/music/2018/mar/26/new-zealand-city-in-an-easter-kerfuffle-over-ed-sheeran Edited by Mobson, Mar 29 2018, 03:05 AM.

Music is music, each to their own. I'm no Ed Sheeran fan but lots of people are and well done to him for going to NZ. |

Ed is certainly doing well for himself and hopefully for others, too. The place to be tonight, of course, is The Butler in Reading, where the fabulous Clara Dawn will (hopefully) be performing. She's planning to demonstrate her range by belting out 'Turtle Blues', singing an Adele number and doing one of her own songs, 'Ghost Girl' - https://claradawn.bandcamp.com/track/ghost-girl |

Got to The Butler on Wednesday and discovered it was acoustic jam night. No less enjoyable - arguably more so - but rather quieter and more mellow than an open mic and not really an occasion for belting out Turtle Blues, so Clara had to rethink her song choices - English, Spanish, French and Irish. ![]() Luckily they had an open mic last night, which was very good and very loud, so she was able to do Turtle Blues then. Unfortunately, Mrs Tickle had a migraine and couldn't go, although she insisted on driving us there - we could have gone by bus, as the rain had relented. Got chatting to a slightly wacky electric guitarist, who very kindly gave us a lift home, which was handy - it would have taken me quite a while to walk to the bus stop. |

Finally I have all the tracks from Grace-2's Latin American album, recorded with an Ecuadorian group a couple of years ago. Very good it is, too. I've been playing them tonight to ward off the deafening silence after her departure this evening. The host of last Wednesday's acoustic jam posted a photo of Grace-2 on FB and dubbed her 'the multi-lingual jukebox'. ![]() |
