I listened to The Fear by Clara Dawn (pointed to in Tickle's post on MC's song theme thread) and thought her voice was quite unusual and deep, and the song almost African sounding in its style. Very nice. The others of hers I listened to weren't quite as unusual, but still made good listening. Last night we had the Taite Awards for creativity in music, and it was won by Aldous Harding. I feel quite proud of myself because Radio NZ played her a couple of years ago for the first time and I wrote her name down as one to listen to and since then she has gone on to bigger things. Taite awards You can find her music on youtube. |

I don't think Clara Dawn's voice is naturally very deep, but she has a good vocal range and she tailors her voice to the song. That said, she does tend to sing deeper now than she used to - probably as a result of all that busking. I've listened to some of Aldous Harding's songs this morning and will listen again later. She sounds very interesting. How Grace-2 would love to have $10,000 to spend on recording an album. I'm not sure how much she spent on her 3rd album, but the first two cost about £200 each - and she struggled to afford that. She was hoping to record another couple of albums last year, but didn't have the funds. This one's quite unusual - https://claradawn.bandcamp.com/track/persephone |

I see that Aldous Harding has cancelled all her overseas tour dates this year because of schedule conflicts with the recording of her next album. How long do people take to record an album these days? |

Clara is very talented and has gone the old-fashioned route of paying her dues and perfecting her craft. I wish her every success, she deserves it. |

Thanks, Rum. I don't suppose that Clara will achieve every success, but perfecting her craft is probably the main success she is looking for. Although she would like to make a bit of money from her music, if only to fund further musical ventures, she doesn't really envisage making a living from it - apart from anything else, she has other priorities at the moment. However, she is hoping to record a "proper" album in the near future. I don't think she'll be spending quite as long or as much on it as Aldous Harding, but she wants to do something of better quality than the shoestring albums she's made so far. She's had quite a varied musical experience in Switzerland, mixing with a group of Latino musicians, playing with a band that performs Irish music and, more recently singing with a group of blues musicians with a view to enriching her voice. She sent us a video clip of them rehearsing the other day, with her belting out "A Mess of Blues". I'm hoping we might get to watch one of their rehearsals when we're in Switzerland next month.
