I'm not a musical purist and I don't believe in artificial barriers but...

In what sense are Alison Krauss and Union Station "jazz"?

I am off to see Alison Krauss on Tuesday. One of the advantages of being off sick at the moment is that I don't have to be out of the country next week. This is a lovely version of an old Foundations song.

I have checked it out, thanks Rum. Although no fan of jazz, I am tempted to 'walk across the road' to this......

Alison has a great band, particularly Jerry Douglas, who has played everything from traditional scottish reels to jazz fusion. Here's a little taste of what Jerry can do. Even if you don't like this kind of music, you have to marvel the skill.

We had a couple of drinks in the Porcupine (CH X Rd) then a nice meal at Cafe des Amis (I really like the blackened chicken leg with mash - I think there is truffle oil in the mash).

Had some drinks in the bar on the 5th floor of the RFH (saw Ed Balls in the bar , presumably there for the gig). Nice to see jugs of free water with plastic glasses on the end of the bar.

The highlights were; Jerry Douglas solo spot ( the band went off and left him to it) - an amazing display of dobro improvisation that went from country through blues to flamenco and the encore, where they did a few four part harmony things. I couldn't fault the rest but there was a slight sense of this being the last of four consecutive nights at the same venue doing the same set.

Had some more drinks in the bar on the 2nd floor, met up with Frank's mate Duncan, who always seems to turn up when we are at the RFH and then I caught the 11.00 train back to T. Wells.

They did do that song Becky and it was good but their version of Richard Thompson's 'Dimming of the day' was spine-tingling. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiy3qGCZZEc

Actually, this recent live version is closer to capturing what Alison can do. A slightly shaky start, filmed from the crowd, but the sound isn't bad at all.
