I only saw her live once, right at the start of her career. She was third on the bill behind Kool and The Gang and The Isley Brothers - an open air thing at Penshurst Place. Just a three piece band, I already had the first album and thought was she a star in the making. Back to black confirmed her potential. A very sad loss to music, only 29. What a silly little girl! She had all the makings of a star with a fantastic voice and she threw it away like the lighted cigarette she threw at passers by on her way to court, or the mike stand and anything else she deemed inappropriate, at her audience. I saw her at Shepherds Bush Empire in her early days where she was fresh and sassy, and promoting Frank, her debut album & later at Brixton Academy when she was getting a name for herself. After the accolades, the grammy's, the drug addled husband, she was all too soon caught in the spiralling drinks and drug trap which started her tragic downward trajectory, exhibiting unreasonable behaviour; she became prone to out of control assaults on the public. In and out of rehab, which became the title one of her most famous songs; spending time on a caribbean island to escape the stresses drowning her didn't do the trick. She went back into rehab to prepare for a 12 date european comeback tour and after being booed off stage in Belgrade last month, clearly intoxicated and 'out of it' , the tour was cancelled, and now she is no more. Bought the Limited Deluxe Edition of Back to Black at the height of her fame; the bonus disc features 8 studio recordings, including a sharp & crystal clear version of Valerie, a really upbeat and sassy 'Hey little rich girl feat. Zalon & Ade, after a moving accoustic version of 'To know him is to love him' plus the original demo for Love is a losing game.....for me this will be her epitaph.... It puts all the jokes and comedy sketches about her in a different light. Maybe in some way she was influenced by the lives of others such as Billie Holliday and herself imagined that life is part of what she was - living a dangerous life of anguish came with her art. It's a terrible loss, especially at her age. Everybody should have had the wisdom of hindsight while she was alive and cared about her more. Press coverage of her can't have helped. |

Indeed, she was her own worst enemy. Such a shame. I saw her whewn she was young, enthusiastic, walking among the crowd at the outdoor concert I was at, chatting to her friends, looking a little bit nervous but healthy and devoid of those dreadful 'Popeye' tattoos, that were close to self abuse.

Just watched the news coverage of her funeral showing mourners arriving in a convoy of silver cars with dark glass windows, as it was a private affair for family and close friends at a jewish synagogue in north London. The official reason for her death will not be announced until the results of further toxicology tests are known; the Inquest was opened and adjourned until 26th October. There is talk of a memorial concert at a later date too.....R I P Amy magic1 Edited by Mobson, Jul 26 2011, 06:27 PM.

Yes her backing singers, a couple of brothers called Heshima and Zalon Thompson, who were at her funeral today, were also interviewed earlier at a music studio where they said they are already in the process of recording their own songs as a tribute to her! |

Unfortunately, like Jimi Hendrix before her (and many others), everything that was ever recorded, no matter how bad, will be fished out of the bin, given to some production wizard and shoved out onto the market to squeeze every last halfpenny out of the poor girl. Amy kept saying her 'new' album was going to be 'very jukebox', which I didn't understand. Is anyone familiar with this use of 'jukebox'? |

It sounds like an indication of her vitality of talent and approach that she could think in ways like that. I guess 'jukebox' means lively, a bit brash, a bit early 60s? I wonder if she had been more on talk shows like J. Ross or Graham Norton she would have felt herself more publically respected for herself and valued. Was she ever on Later with Jools? Probably, I imagine ...... ? Edited by caissier, Jul 27 2011, 01:47 PM.

Yes, Jools broke the Back to Black album, I think. I recall she looked quite plump and had those shocking tattoos but put on a good performance. Media remarks about her weight upset her though and I think she suffered eating disorders as a result. |

I had my ipod on shuffle yesterday and Amy's 'Live lounge' version of Valerie came up. I fired up 'Back to black' and it was like listening to a different album than I remembered. Rehab's defiance sounds more poignant now, more a cry for help. Other lines on that album hit me like darts. 'I cheated myself, like I knew I would. I told you I was trouble, you know that I'm no good.' |

Two programmes on BBC 2 tonight in tribute to Amy starting at 10-35 with.. Amy Winehouse Tribute Jools Holland presents a collection of Amy Winehouse's performances on Later, the Hootenanny and at the Mercury Prize between 2003 and 2007. Winehouse made her TV debut on Later in 2003 with songs from her debut album Frank. Like Jools, she loved classic jazz and blues singers like Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan, and the two Londoners hit it off. Amy returned to play with Jools's Orchestra at that year's Hootenanny, to Later in 2006 for the launch of Back to Black and to that year's Hootenanny to perform Toots's Monkey Man and duet with Paul Weller. Back to Black was nominated for the 2007 Mercury Prize and Winehouse performed a heartrending version of Love's Just a Losing Game accompanied only by her guitarist - a fitting end to this celebration of the mercurial, brilliant and troubled singer in her prime. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0139h7z .....followed by BBC Sessions: Amy Winehouse. Another chance to see a 23-year-old Amy Winehouse at Porchester Hall where, hot from her triumph at the 2007 Brits, she gave a special one-off concert. Crowned 2007's Best British Female, Amy performed songs from her Back to Black album and her 2003 Mercury Music Prize nominated album, Frank. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b007cl28 |

Both of those programmes sound good, especially like to see Amy on Later...see from my diary, when making a cricketing post in the Sports thread that the day after I came back from Antigua, I went to see her perform live at Shepherds Bush Empire...Tuesday 4th May 2004...entry reads "Glad overcame jet lag to see this talented young woman perform from her debut album Frank, that I have practically worn out! - She's so tiny and waves her arms about when that amazing voice booms out her lyrics".... rrrrossseee See that Mark Ronson turned a gig to promote his band, The Business International, into an unofficial memorial concert last Thursday in Greenwich. His show was organised months ago, but he tore up the programme and dedicated the performance to Amy, who he has called 'my genius sister Amy' also saying "she made brilliant music - more than I will every make in my entire life". He opened with an accoustic duet of her hit single Valerie with Dave McCabe who wrote it, and finished his DJ set with 'Rehab' ...for the finale, Amy's former backing singers, her bass player and drummer joined Ronson to perform Valerie again with the audience taking lead vocals. read the full article here..... http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/showbiz/article-23973796-mark-ronson-leads-the-singalong-for-my-genius-sister-amy.do Edited by Mobson, Aug 6 2011, 03:47 PM.

Delayed because of the Proms, the BBC programmes let the music and Amy herself be their airtime tribute after her tragic early death last month. Jools Holland stood alone on an empty stage set and as her friend introduced selected sets to celebrate her short career and aptly demonstrate what a talent she was. rrrrossseee Starting with her television debut on his programme, Later, her song, Stronger than me, shows Amy fresh faced, confident, happy and full of promise. I do not watch J's Hootenanny so it was the first time I had seen her performances, especially her interpretation of Dinah Washington's 'Teach me tonight' in 2004; her rendition of "I heard it through the grapevine" with Paul Weller in 2006 and her duet again with Paul Weller, Don't go to Stangers, which Jools says "shows the strength of Amy's voice...something about her delivery that suddenly draws you to the song...makes you realise what poetry the song has and that's the job of a true great singer...that's why she was like Edith Piaf or Bessie Smith or one of the great singers of all time" Interspersed with Amy sitting on a window ledge, lighting up a cigarette, talking about herself, her feelings and her songs. The last song in the programme is the one that really gets to you. Now 2007, Amy's cleavage and arms display more tattoos, eyes made up with even thicker black exaggerated eyeliner and the short skirt which she fiddles with. Love is a Losing Game...lyrics that tell her story. The BBC One Sessions, which Becky has given the link to, is another change to see Amy in a special one-off concert surrounded by her backing group, and is probably one of the last times she sang a selection of her songs relatively sober and relatively drug-free. Her looks is well established and her beehive is high! She says 'I'm trying to find my Dad' which may be prophetic about her loneliness when he later embarked on his own singing career. Her language is florid and she drinks throughout the set, and mentions being drunk! Nearing the end, crouching down to sip from her glass, she is still singing. This performance is typical Amy, feisty, fruity, spunky, and her voice is golden and magic123 ... Edited by Mobson, Aug 7 2011, 09:41 AM.

"I'm sure caissier may be interested in your last post here Becky...about tonight's showing of Amy on Jools' Later.... " Yes .... I will watch it .... thanks for mentioning it. It is unfortunate that people who can be taken for granted are suddenly appreciated more after the sadness of their dying. I'm not sure about seeing tributes with performances immediately; she is dead but there she is moving and singing, her face in close-up, especially, in Amy's case being so expressive of emotion. |

BTW, The two programmes are to be repeated on Wednesday next on BBC3 at 9pm and 9.40pm respectively. It is the way of our world, caissier, and some people feel cheated when there aren't enough tributes, in their mind, to a recently departed star. Of the positive things, Amy's father has revealed plans to set up a foundation in his daughter's name to help people struggling with addition. "If you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a 2yr waiting list for help" Mitch Winehouse said at the singer's funeral. A duet between jazz legend Tony Bennett and Amy is to be released as a charity single. Proceeds from the jazz classic 'Body and Soul' will go toward the foundation. The pair recorded the track at London's Abbey Road studios in March. It was one of the last recordings she made. It will be released ahead of Bennett's Duets ll Album, out on 20th September. In an interview with R4's Front Row last month, Bennett praised Amy's musical talent, calling her "truly, a good jazz singer". Edited by Mobson, Aug 7 2011, 06:35 PM.

Unexplained no more, Rum...At yesterday's coroners court, Amy's death was officially recorded as 'Misadventure'. St Pancras coroner, Suzanne Greenway said the "unintended consequence" of Amy drinking so much alcohol resulted in her "sudden and unexpected death" The inquest heard that the singer had 416mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood. The legal drink-drive limit is 80mg. The pathologist who conducted her post-mortem said 350mg of alcohol per 100ml was considered a fatal level. This poor young woman, who had kicked her drug habit, but fell back into a pattern of abstaining from drink and then starting again, could not beat her devils, whatever they were, and allow her to live out her life. After the Inquest, her family issued a statement thanking people for their messages of support. They said it was "some relief to finally find out what happened to Amy". If they were a close family, surely they already knew that! Edited by Mobson, Oct 27 2011, 11:42 AM.

I downloaded the posthumous, 'Lioness' album yesterday. There is some old stuff, which is quite charming - I'd forgotten how good the 'young Amy' actually sounded. Actually, pretty much all the vocals are fine on here but some of the production is dreadful. I need to give it another listen through a proper Hi Fi (not my ipod phones) to be sure. It sounds like there is a one note kazoo on the first track (maybe it is a very badly played sax), the percussion on the third track sounds like a dustbin lid being randomly hit with a bicycle pump, the Carol King song sounds like it has been produced by Phil Spector's kid brother (Mark Ronson, in fact) and there is one track ruined by the obligatory 'hippity hoppity, rippety, rappety gibberish that is unavoidable these days. There is a so so duet with Tony Bennett that was obviously recorded in two different continents (no proper empathy). However, while I feared this would be Amy's producers trying to salvage something from poor vocal performances, in fact that's what saves it, for me anyway. |

Yes they did it at Abbey Road Studios on 23rd March - the song and a video that can be seen on YouTube but the link here is more interesting... "We had a beautiful time recording together in the studio, and I knew that Amy was very happy with how she performed that day," Bennett said in a statement. "I thought she was absolutely brilliant, and this recording truly captures the essence of her unique artistry. She was a rare talent." http://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/video-amy-winehouse-and-tony-bennett-sing-body-and-soul-497174 Edited by Mobson, Jan 4 2012, 12:57 PM.
