After reading another thread on Kinks and Dave Davies I looked up some Who and Steve Winwood (Spencer Davis Group) on Youtube just for the memory.
Have to say that (ignoring the clothes and hai)r the music is still fantastic.
Won't get Fooled Again could surely be just as popular today (and relevant) and what a voice Stevie Winwood had/has. He was just a young'un but had a great gravelly bluesy voice even then.
Must look some other stuff up!

I really like Fairground Attraction's version of 'Do you want to know a secret' (also a hit for BJK&TD)

some excellent memory refreshers
We didn't have a tv when I was young and the first time I ever saw Top of the Pops was at a friend's house and I still remember seeing Mick Jagger singing/performing for the first time -Get off of My Cloud ----and I enter into a new world!

My Generation by The Who was the first single I ever bought. I still have it. It still sounds amazing; a 3 minute single with a bass solo, crazy drumming, stammering and an 'attitude' lyric. I think I was 9 years old. Click here

Strange I didn't remember that first Stones single - enjoyed listening this time.
At school the prefects had been allowed a lunchtime disco hour (much against the nun's better judgement!) and we younger gals gathered outside the door to listen to M-m-my G-g-generation blasting out, longing to go in and roar along with it. (Why don't you all f-f-fade away') Most unladylike!
I went to a French/English 2 week holiday education thing when about 15 (to improve my French) and we had an end of hols sing along/concert. The French girls taught us Thank Heavens for little Girls (how innocent times were then!) but we taught them Dylan's Blowing in the Wind. They got the better deal methinks
Oh just remembered -they let us play Scott Walker 'My Ship is coming in' (is that the title?) at assembly instead of hymns. But it was only allowed once and then God told the Mother Superior this all had to stop as it was a sin!

What a spoilsport,that God... :)

I can't see My Ship is Coming even getting an airing at my school with the Mother Superior we had...so lucky you, mareli

I could fill the thread with this group.... :$

It's amazing that a song I have been listening to since I was nine can still sound so fresh. Just listen to the drumming and the bass solo! That's before you even consider the lyrics. Compare this 'teenage rebellion' song with 'Summertime blues' by Eddie Cochran, which sounds pretty namby pamby by comparison. Mind you, The Who reinvented that song on the 'Live at Leeds' album. click here for Summetime Blues

The Beatles are a whole different subject Becky.

For me, there are two classic British rock n roll records:

Classic UK Rock 'n' Roll 1 great guitar from Dave Green RUMBABA

Classic Rock 'n' Roll 2 hard to believe but credit where credit's due!

I'm feeling really nostalgic now looking at these links
Cliff was looking a bit sexy/smouldery back then wasn't he? He changed to something a bit boring _sorry Cliff fans

Lots of those songs seemed 'beyond pop' somehow, tunefully philosphical, uninhibitedly but also introvertedly musing on young life. I think this, like My Generation, both anthems, innocently and joyously hits a sociological nail on the head. There's something magically, weirdly clever, even flabbergasting, about the tune. (To be played LOUD!! happyyyyy )

..... I Can't Explain, Substitute, I'm a Boy, Pictures of Lily, Happy Jack .... others? ..... in a class of their own for me.....

(This Who film is a bit more like it!! ModWorld .....

great links - it's hard to actually describe what was happening back then ( I like your description caissier) and easy to think now that it was better than it actually was - but I don't think so somehow.
The older generation I suppose always looks back and says the current music, sport or whatever was better then --but I have noticed some of the comments on youtube from younger people indicating they think the music was better then and what is around now is poor in comparison
