Listening right now to Simon day being interviewed by Rhys Thomas, who said Simon is the funniest man he knows. I'm finding it it very funny indeed .... so I thought I'd mention the programme.

He's had an up and down life, including being in Borstal. He gives lots of information, lots of funny showbiz stuff ..... he has a great comic manner imo, as though he can respond to anything with an amused attitude. Rhys does a good, matey job talking to him.

Just listening now on i-player, got to the bit about Day's attention deficit disorders at school, now Borstal.. ok1 took a year off from Borstal!

One of my fav dvd sets in comedy is still The Fast Show, where he was Billy Bleach, and of course the Competitive Dad!

This is the first of six in Series 7....next week Simon Day interviews one of his musical heroes, Peter Hook, bass player in Joy Division and New Order, co-owning a famous nightclub and his new career as a DJ.

I have tickets to go to a recording at the Beeb next week of a Chain Reaction further down the road, which will see Mark Steel interview the sports commentator Barry Davies...this is an interview that promises to be 'interesting'...very interesting! laugh

Yes I heard Simon Day - he doesn't complain about his experiences does he - excellent.
Rhys Thomas sounded and interviewed very much as he does in Down the Line!
The Mark Steel/ Barry Davies sounds a treat - lucky you Mobson having tickets - you will catch a good hour and a half before it is cut down for the half hour broadcast

I enjoyed this. I caught it by accident, didn't know who it was initially and thought it was great

Yes do Mobson
I really admire Mark Steel and will look out for when he is interviewed.
He makes his points with such ascerbic humour- but I sometimes worry he is tired of fighting!

Listened to a programme today about AHDH with Rory Bremner.....Simon Day said in this programme it was known as fidgeting in the seventies.

( the programme with Rory was an interesting one and still available on iPlayer)

Yes, I quite liked that 'fidgeting' and 'can't spell' line from SD.

It's a difficult area. My BiL is a headmaster (primary) and told me that some parents get money if their child has whatever condition / syndrome. They get quite angry if the school doesn't confirm their claim. Autism, dyslexia and, I suppose in some cases, 'attention deficit disorder', are real issues but a lot of kids just suffer from not being brought up properly and these labels are sometimes mis applied.

Agree about the fidgeting
I am sure some kids do have real problems but not as many as are being diagnosed.
When a teacher (or parent ) said behave or stop fidgeting you used to stop - I can't remember anyone who couldn't stop when teacher picked up the strap yikes

I loved listening to these two very likeable men having a chin wag.....only wish it could have been longer.

"Morrissey thought Joy Division were miserable"..... laughxxxxx

"I thought DJs were arrogant and overpaid", he says, "So when I became one I fitted right in". :D

Last night's Chain Reaction with Simon Day interviewing Peter Hook, musician, club owner and DJ, was a pretty straight forward affair; the conversations about Manchester's overall music scene were familiar having seen 2 films in late 2007, "Joy Division" Grant Gee's documentary giving a chronological account of the influences of the English rock band in the seventies, which featured Peter Hook and many of the people involved in the whole Manchester music scene; and Anton Corbijn's feature film 'Control' which profiled the lead singer, Ian Curtis, who committed suicide at the age of 23. Peter talked post Joy Division when he formed New Order with former members of JD and also of other bands, like The Smiths, who emanated from Manchester.

What was interesting was Hook's own take on the club, Hacienda. He was a co-owner, and said it ended up costing the group £15 million to keep it running.
"Well, there aren't many groups that have subsidised the entertainment of a whole city for fifteen years!". He subsequently wrote a book about the whole experience called 'How Not to Run a Club' in 2009,
and is currently writing a book about Joy Division; revisiting it's music catalogue and actually playing some of the music live again with his own son on bass which he said "is spooky!".

Next week Peter Hook interviews fellow Salfordian, punk poet laureate John Cooper Clarke, who the following week interviews Mark Steel, who the week after interviews Brian Davies.. the recording I went to on Thursday evening - see separate post!

Note to Becky: Wrote this at 8am this morning...thought I had posted it but it was still in my draft folder! Anyway, we obviously both enjoyed this one! ok1222 laughxxxxx

No, mareli, I haven't posted about the Mark Steel interview yet...been taken up with the cricket and my son's last week here before he departs for far shores again!

However, I'm going to a recording on Monday evening, which was to be John Cooper Clark interviewing Mark Steel...have received a BBC email today entitled 'change of plan'.
There will be 2 recordings that evening: first JCC interviewing actor Kevin Eldon (Brass Eye, Spaced, Black Books, Big Train, World of Pub, Alan Partridge etcetera, wrote & starred in R4's Poets' Tree and is the singer in Beergut 10). Kevin Eldon will then interview Mark Steel, who as we know has already interviewed Brian Davis!

Off to the BBC radio theatre at Broadcasting House quite late tonight (9.30pm) for a new series of tag-team interviewing for Chain Reaction...recorded in front of an audience, the six part series has some big name stars from the world of entertainment interviewing others whose work they appreciate and admire.

Tonight, three-time BAFTA Award winning actress Olivia Colman will be interviewing Sharon Horgan - the co-creator and star of BBC's Pulling (BAFTA nominated for Best Sitcom, Winner of the British Comedy Award for Best Actress). Sharon is also the writer and star of Dead Boss, writer of Monkey Dust and guest host of Have I Got News For You.

p.s. Simon Day and Rhys Thomas are not in this current series (as far as I know)...the thread was started by Caiss back in 2011, I can't amend it to just 'Chain Reaction"

Wow ..... that's a dream-team duo!

Pulling was brilliant ...... really clever and funny against so much so-so stuff these days.

Unfortunately I never actually got to see the dream-team duo in action, as I had a father-related emergency to deal with...I'm used to that happening over the course of this year as I've occasionally had to drop everything to come to the aid of my bedridden, terminally ill parent. Hence no feedback here!

However the gods have shined and I get another chance to see them, although in a different conversation-combo as part of a double recording of this tag-team programme early in the New Year.

Firstly comedian Vic Reeves, creator of the anarchic and absurdist shows Shooting Stars, House of Fools, and The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, interviews the "versatile BAFTA winning actress Olivia Colman of Peep Show, Broadchurch, and Twenty Twelve" and much more... After which Sharon Horgan, "Pulling, Dead Boss, and Psychobitches", interviews the prolific Dennis Kelly, the co-writer of the BAFTA nominated Pulling, and writer of Matilda the Musical, and Utopia. Now that is exciting as I watched both series of C4's weird and wonderful Utopia <wink>
