Sad news also to hear of the deaths of Esther Gordy Edwards who built Motown along with her brother Berry Gordy Jr and Nickolas Ashford of Ashford and Simpson.

What I found amazing was that Jerry Leiber would have been only 19 when he co-wrote the original (12-bar blues,"Big Mama" Thornton )

A lot of people seem to have a burst of creativity when very young,madfor4,only for it to dry up pretty quickly in some cases.

I must be a 'slow starter' then.....I'm still waiting for my initial "burst of creativity"

Yes .... it was said that they assumed they were producing throwaway stuff. It shows how the, apparently, slightest thing can have genius or magic to it ...... and so, similarly, the least thing about a person can be something wonderful.

...... and how so many things must go unappreciated because their merits are not recognised or even looked for.

It's true ..... babies or toddlers can do amazing things.

A favourite of mine is Smokey Joe's Cafe, which I know through LW III .....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FU7XCWRuhck ...... cover by The Addled Zen Ramblers (great name for a band <happy> ) nice guitars imo!

(However ..... the unbeatable original .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3j3xm_tJu-o&NR=1&feature=fvwp )

Some people will say, as with Stax records, it was white, Jewish people making money out of black music. I think it is more complicated than that, although it is true that a lot of blues and rhythm 'n' blues tunes were straight 'lifts', they added something that added 'commercial potential' and recognised the value when no one else wanted to know.

People should also remember that Hoyt Axton's mum wrote 'Heartbreak Hotel', which is one of the classic pop songs of all time.
