Ahhh, I watched a press junket yesterday in which the 75 year old Glen was being interviewed alongside his wife, Kim, who sometimes had to finish his sentences to keep the conversation flowing. The junket was basically to promote his final UK tour, following the announcement in June that he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and the release of his latest album, Ghost On The Canvas on 29th August.

The tour, entitled 'Good Times- The Final Farewell' comes here in October to stage 15 concerts around the UK as follows:

Salford Lowry (October 21)
London Royal Festival Hall (22)
Cardiff St David’s Hall (23)
Northampton Royal Derngate Theatre (24)
Liverpool Philharmonic Hall (25)
Nottingham Royal Concert Hall (26)
York Barbican (28)
Newcastle City Hall (29)
Basingstoke Anvil (30)
Plymouth Pavilions (November 1)
Bristol Colston Hall (2)
Brighton Dome (3)
Guildford G-Live (4)
Southend Cliffs Pavilion (5)
Birmingham Symphony Hall (6)

I heard a radio interview with him and his wife the other week...very sad news that he is suffering with Alzheimer's disease....what a devastating illness that is.

Lovely voice..... his songs have long been favourites of mine

Glen was in the Beach Boys for a short period.

To be honest, I am not a fan of his type of country music or his voice, it's all a bit corny showbiz for my liking, but I do wish him all the best with this last tour and album.

There was a nice interview with him and his wife on Today a couple of days ago with a lot of laughing. I've heard it said that a way of approaching Altzheimer's to to laugh at failings and concentrate on what can be done. It might have been his son saying that music is helpful. He seems very well liked and has a happy family to support him. I'm not mad about songs like Phoenix and Wichita Lineman but they do evoke for me a picture of a wide open American landscape and a yearning to reach comfort. Burt Bacarach said Galveston should be sung slowly but I like very much the original version and its imo glorious soaring tune.

(tut! Jimmy Webb not Burt Bacarach)

On right now on R4's Soul music, Glen Campbell is talking about the song that is it's subject this week, Wichita Lineman, which was written by Jimmy Webb for him...

It's David Gray talking about the song. He prefers Johnny Cash's version and they just played Dennis Brown's version (reggae star). The guitar solo on the Glen Campbell version always makes me think of someone twanging telephone wires. From a guitar playing point of view, it is pretty dire but it seems to fit somehow. RUMBABA

Well it's Glen's voice we hear first....he actually gave an interview for the programme and shortly after it was recorded, went public about his diagnosis of Alzheimer's.

David Crary, a lineman from Oklahoma describes his job and the first time he heard it, which adds depth to the song ...(not David Gray!) and Peter Lewry, a long time Cash fan, talks about Cash's version towards the end of his career, and how it came about! Fascinating!

Sorry Mobs, I'm all over the place today. Lost my phone (or thought I had) and Mrs R couldn't find an outfit for her niece's wedding (got it this afternoon, thank God). I wasn't listening properly. Trying to sort out my Russian visa and, and, and..... <brickwall>

I liked hearing of the woman's recollections of her dad and the person (didn't catch who that was) who remembered it from his childhood

You can't beat Glen Campbell's version for me

S'okay, Rum! I've been on tenterhooks all week for the want of hearing news of my son and hurricane Irene, so I completely understand...hey Dr Who's back in less than an hour, he'll sort out all our problems!

GC's stuff has never been to my taste, but this song was magic - I couldn't get it out of my head since I heard the programme. For me it was the music; a beautiful, haunting melody and chord structure to match. Of the several interpretations played, I preferred the one by Johnny Cash, whose voice seemed to suit the song best. A memorable programme.

I thought his 'Limestone Crowbar' had a certain lilt to it.

Seriously, what a sad thing that he has Alzheimers disease. He has a great singing voice and I've always admired the way he presented himself on stage.
