Ryland's new album 'Pull up some dust and sit down' can't really be called 'a return to form' because everything Ry does is interesting. However, he has gone back to the elements of his early, ground breaking albums and used them as the building blocks for what has been described as 'protest songs having a party'. He has a pop at bankers, politicians and has a lot of pertinent things to say about life in general. Good stuff from the master Here's a track (click here) for 'Quicksand' by Ry Cooder from new album 'Pull up some dust...' Edited by rumbaba, Sep 10 2011, 01:36 PM.

Unfortunately, due to some copyright issue, Quicksand is the only track from the album available on youtube. The others have been pulled. A shame, cos it's not representative of the best of what's on offer. The mix of blues, folk, country, Mexican, rock n roll all melded into Ry's distictive blend of Americana harks back to his best stuff like 'Chicken skin music' and 'Paradise and lunch'. There are some terrific poignant ballads, like 'Simple Tools' and 'No hard feelings' and a great John Lee Hooker 'homage' (too good for pastiche) called 'John Lee Hooker for president'. You can hear mariachi, steel drums, mandolins, accordians, saxes in the arranagements, which are subtle and effective as well as Ry's fabulous but understated guitar (acoustic, electric, slide). |

Rumbaba! How great to know there is another Cooder fan out there. I've loved him since "Into the Purple Valley". In fact, Ry is the reason that my partner of 30 years and I got together. He had a ticket to see him at the Odeon Hammersmith in 1981 and I just had to go. I found out later that he had asked someone else, but dropped her in favour of me. (What a cad!) I heard Cooder talking about the album on the World Service (in the middle of the night) on a programme called 'The Strand'. It might be downloadable, n'est-ce pas? Anyway thanks for the recommendation, we've stuck with Cooder as he has explored some mighty recherche musical tributaries, (Latinos and UFO's, Ali Farka etc ) but it's good to know he's back on form; sounds like we're talking about Woody Allen! I raise a gigantic marguerita ( salt-rimmed and tequila-heavy) to you! |

wildhyperboleThis album is up there with the best Ry has done IMO. I downloaded it but I believe it is available in all formats (it comes with a booklet). |
