Decent line up tonight. Trombone Shorty (from New Orleans) was terrific, Little Dragon were interesting, Snow Patrol were ok ( if you like that sort of thing) and Roy Harper was still alive, which came as a surprise. |

I've been a fan for a while, got the Backatown album, the new one sounds good. He played the London Blues Festival this year and featured in the first series of Treme. It's good to see New Orleans is still coming up with the goods.

Great solid sound from Wilko Johnson ..... ..his moves were good too.....does look slightly though.... Laura Marling, whose recently released third album, A Creature I Don't Know has been rapturously received, headlines but tonight's star turn in a bill that features veterans on 'Later Live' must be Tony Bennett, who will perhaps talk a little about his collaboration with Amy Winehouse as he performs a number from his second collection of duets (presumably solo!) ...Jamaica's Little Roy offers an example of his reggae versions of Nirvana songs on the album Battle for Seattle; Miles Kane, folk/country/duo the Civil Wars and pop/rock trio Silver Seas complete Jools Holland's line up. BBC2 10pm tonight... |

I heard a bit of 'The Civil Wars' and Tony deserves respect. I like some of Laura's stuff but I am a little bit suspicious of the whole 'nu folk' thing, which seems to consist mainly of ex public school boys with banjos. Laura has already inspired one album of songs by leaving Charlie Fink of 'Noah and the whale' for Marcus Mumford of 'Mumford and sons'. It's all a bit too cliquey for me - a bit like an extended 'Fleetwood Mac'. |

I really like this song from newcomer Lana Del Ray who is on Later tonight... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HO1OV5B_JDw I read in an article that after posting one song (Video Games) online, this 24-year-old American singer sold out a London gig in half an hour....one to watch? The line up also includes....Peter Gabriel,The Horrors,Noah and the Whale and Ghostpoet. |

Nope Becky, I don't know Feist, but I don't listen to music radio much, so I would have missed it. I believe her name is Leslie Feist. I can't imagine why she would choose to be known as 'Feist': 'Feisty' maybe but 'Feist' is about as appealing as 'Prefab Sprout' or 'Toad the wet sprocket'. |

Everyone has a brass section tonight (except the metal band); Feisty, Bon Iver. I wonder if Buddy Greco will. Nope, his trio with Jools sticking his organ in (I wish he would just butt out and let people do their thing). Buddy is ok for his age but he doesn't sound like he is singing in tune. The trio can swing though. |

Lianne La Havas singing solo, just with an electric guitar. Good voice, confident player. nothing flashy but nice slides and harmonics and bang on timing like a metronome. |

I liked the song (clever lyrics) and the style of Lianne La Havas....very polished performance from a relative newcomer....also enjoyed Ben L'Oncle Soul with his snazzy backing singers....liked the song. Buddy Greco sang those lyrics with great aplomb....sounding very with it at the age of 85! The less said about Feist, the better as far as I'm concerned and wasn't that thrilled about the Bon Iver song either.... |

I spotted Seb Roachford, whom I saw with Andy Sheppard, and his own band Polar Bear at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, slumming it with the Brett Anderson band on Jools last night. He was looking suitably embarrassed but, if you are going to be a drum tart for hire Seb, you have got to try to be a bit less conspicuous. The hair is a bit of a giveaway ![]()

I thought Pete Townsend was pretty dire, the short bit of Mary J Blige was promising, Brett Anderson washed over me and 'My morning jacket' were awful. I am not a Florence fan but she did pretty good and I like the fact she has a harpist in the band. Nearly forgot, I like Bombino, good guitar player. Cold Specks was interesting. I agree about Mary J and was extremely disappointed with My Morning Jacket... as for Pete Townsend when he gave the first John Peel lecture he said ,amongst other things, "I don't give a s*** about making money. I think rock music is junk. I am a genius. The Who were OK but without me they would have all ended up working in the flower market, or worse - in Led Zeppelin."Now I don't know him well enough to know if he meant that or was joking! http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2011/nov/01/pete-townshend-john-peel-lecture |

You probably had to be there but Pete is a strange guy. What he says is usually laced with a bit of humour but he has always been a bit 'up himself'. Sadly, he nailed it back in 1965 when he had a premonition of what he might turn into: "hope I die before I get old" (BTW "My Generation" was the first record I ever bought )

Lou Reed with Metallica were just appalling. At one point it was like they were simultaneously performing two different songs (neither of which I wanted to hear). watching the Friday show. Lou Reed and Metallica Steve Earle God, he is looking old! Good to see women musicians getting a break. Has a male steel player though, shame he doesn't have Cindy Cashdollar in the band - one of the best slide / steel guitar / dobro players around.Keb Mo' Nile Rogers - legend Great producer and musician.Soul Rebels Brass Band - Aaron Neville - always liked his voice The Neville family, like the Marsalis family is a great New Orleans dynasty.Hollie Cooke - liked the band and I liked her contribution but is this really her band? I quite liked the first song from The Red Hots...thought it was different for them, but the way they looked ... Bjork's song and performance put me in mind of a rehearsal at a music and movement class....I do like her though .....and some of her work. The few songs I've heard off Noel Gallagher's album I like ...they have a familiar retro sound that is quite catchy....can't think why Jools spoke to Noel ....it was so hurried as to be a complete waste of time. All round I thought it was the best one of the series.. |

....and a good year it seems for Macca! The annual Sunday Times Rich List is published today - Under the title 'Beatle still rocking on' Sir Paul McCartney is up £170mil this year....(2011 = £495m No. 161) to 124 in the list....mind you they have added £150m for the new Lady McCartney's share of her family's fortune! She is vice-president of New England Motor Freight, the haulage business led by her father. Macca was back on the road in 2011 with 24 gigs, starting in Peru and ending in Liverpool...Pollstar reported gross box office receipts of $79.2m (£50m) in Februrary. He released an album, Kisses on the Bottom, (which we talked about here) and Musice Week reported that 10m Beatles tracks had been downloaded in the year after the group became available on iTunes. Apple Corps, the main Beatles company, posted profits of £5.2m for 2011, paying £18m to the two surviving band members Paul and Ringo and the families of the others. McCartney's MPL Communications reported a £12.9m profit and Maclen (Music) which controls some Lennon & McCartney songwriting revenues show a £5.3m profit too. Next week Macca plays two concerts in Mexico.....Total = £665m No. 124 |

Paloma Faith and Esperanza Spalding both on tonight. Pammy's new album has been a long time in the making and will be released on 28th May. Free acoustic version of Black and Blue download available. Click here for free Paloma Faith download (acoustic version of 'Black and Blue') Esperanza playing bass guitar is out with her new funk band, which I'm intrigued about (she is a fabulous double bass player and has a wonderful voice but I 'm not sure what a funky ES will sound like). A good show but The Hives standing like a bunch of statues while everyone else (Pammy included, who discarded the strange, Christmas-decoration bottom of her dress) was grooving to Jimmy Cliff singing 'you can get it if you really want' tells you all you need to know about The Hives. I want to see a bit more of Esperanza. It wasn't hard-edged funk but more bridging the gap between funk and modern jazz. I liked it but I'm not sure it was right for this programme. |

Yes, Bobby was good - surprised to see Damon Albarn playing piano for him. I've never really like Neil Sedaka's brand of cheese and it hasn't aged well. I'm not a fan of the Mumfords but I can see their appeal and they do what they do pretty well, I really liked the gold plated Gretsch guitar that Lisa Marie Presely's guitar player had, the Savages were surprisingly good and the jury is out on Rudimental - I need to hear something else but I think they were ok. Van Morrison was at Ronnie Scott's on Sunday night doing his new album, which has had rave reviews (it's all in the timing :(, I was there the night before - boo hoo). He has a fabulous 7 piece band who got rave reviews for the gig along with Van. |
