Sad news indeed! Although diagnosed with lung cancer a couple of years ago, Bert was still touring and giving concerts up until August. Touring with Neil Young in the States and Canada in April/May... “Bert Jansch is the best acoustic guitarist; he's my favourite anyway. For electric guitar, I'd say Jimi Hendrix. But as for acoustic guitar, Bert Jansch is on the same level as Jimi. That first record of his is epic. It came from England, and I was especially taken by ‘The Needle of Death', such a beautiful and angry song...” - Neil Young As a founder member of Pentangle, the godfathers of English folk music, the group reformed to play this year's Glastonbury in June and on lst August played the Royal Albert Hall; people who were lucky enough to be there saw a legend on the guitar and the end of an era...He had to cancel a gig in Edinburgh later that month because he became very unwell. It is clear that he influenced many musicians over the years ..lots of dedications already on his facebook page; his profile picture is below. http://read.mtvhive.com/2011/10/05/on-the-legacy-of-bert-jansch/ Edited by Mobson, Oct 5 2011, 10:29 PM.

Ah poor old Bert. I saw him play live twice and he was mesmerizing both times. He also had a great voice and an extraordinary singing technique that seemed to lay all the stresses in the lyrics in places that seemed wrong but were so right. He was truly great. My partner and I saw him play the first time, sometime in the Eighties in a grotty pub in South London . During the interval Bert was found at the bar trying to sink a few quiet drinks when my partner decided to make a request. I can't remember which Pentangle song he requested but Bert took a long draw at his drink, paused, looked hard at us and replied. "I don't play that one, it's one of Renbourn's". Tonight at 22:55 on BBC4 Bert Jansch in Session...first shown in 2008 Legendary Scottish singer, songwriter and guitarist Bert Jansch performs a career retrospective concert at LSO St Luke's in East London to celebrate his 60th birthday. Guests include ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, ex-Suede guitarist Bernard Butler, Ralph McTell and fellow Pentangle member Jacqui McShee. Bert Jansch was one of the key trailblazers of the British folk scene of the 1960s. As a soloist, and then with folk-jazz outfit Pentangle, Jansch blazed a trail for an iconoclastic blend of folk, blues, jazz and original songs that has made him a hero to the likes of Neil Young and Jimmy Page. His guitar and singing style remain unique. This concert features many of the songs that Jansch has played throughout his career, including Davy Graham's Anji, Jackson C Frank's Blues Run The Game and traditional material like Blackwaterside, together with more recent songs like Riverbank and Crimson Moon.
