Alas another old trouper has taken her last curtain call. Betty Driver...Betty Turpin in Corrie... died in her sleep yesterday. I can go back far enough to remember when she was the lead girl vocalist with Henry Hall's Orchestra |

I always thought she was very attractive for her age...she was on Desert Island Discs not that long ago and told of a very unhappy childhood with a cruel and uncaring mother...it's still available to listen to ...there were happy times too.... http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00xp1fc/Desert_Island_Discs_Betty_Driver/ She hated this recording of herself singing I'll Take Romance ..(chosen as one of her discs for the island) I think it has a certain charm ...lovely song. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbGc9Ez3Kkw ![]() |

I haven't watch Coro St hardly at all since Bet Lynch was shunted out so unceremoniously and with the wrong feel, in my opinion. She shuld have gone out with a bang not a whimper. My impression was the Betty Turpin didn't get many stories of her own - she was usually in the background. However I see she had a different name by the end of her time there, so must have married and that must have been story for her. I saw her saying she first interviewed for Hilda, but was pleased she didn't get that part, as she wouldn't have wanted to live her life in curlers, or be referred to as Hilda down the street. No indeed. |
