I remember him having a program in grainy black & white, at least that's how he appeared on our first television, and the program was called 'Broadway goes Latin', a title that meant nothing to me, but the catchy cha-cha-cha rhythms left a vague memory, as did the dancers swirling around the floor, mirrorball-lit. Anyway, old Edmundo (people trying to impress call him 'Edmoondoh'; to others, he's plain Ed Mundoe-Ross, but his dad was a Scot) , had a jolly good innings on the podium. Maybe he is, or was, yet more proof of the ripe old ages that people live when their life is dominated by musical rhythm. ................................. cha/cha/cha !!!

I remember him starting to get very popular in 1945/6. The people that ran our Youth Club ("teenagers" were still to be invented) used to play his music on the weekly dance nights. I first got to like 'latin' through his influence. I saw him on 2 or 3 occasions at ballroom venues in London.

I could not understand what was 'Latin' about it. To me, youthful egghead that I was, Latin was a language spoken by the Romans, and even I knew this music was definitely not what Caligula was listening to in the Colliseum as Christian-slaughtering background sounds. Later on, I came accross the expression, 'Latin lover', and I was not sure whether it meant an amorous signore from Rome, or someone who really enjoyed parsing Latin verbs. Truth to tell, I'm still not sure... Any connections with Central American music came much later.... |

That Laurel and Hardy thing is good Dai, isn't it? ![]() ".... He opened Mayfair's Embassy Club, sporting ruffle-sleeved "rumba shirts", and led Edmundo Ros's Rumba Band in the New Cosmo and other clubs. A 1939 Melody Maker headline declared, with the popular new dance in mind, "He came… he saw… he conga'd!" Ros's first recording, Los Hijos de Buda (Sons of Buddha, 1941) was authentic Cuban rumba......" Rumba shirts, rumba band - my kinda guy! Edited by rumbaba, Oct 24 2011, 03:57 PM.
