Why are we here? No, not the meaning of life, but using these boards? I'll start... Working as an independent consultant I tend to have R4 burbling in the background. The former BBC boards seemed to attract some interesting characters. Some listeners are moderately intelligent too , so I value hearing other people's views on diverse topics.I guess the only connection we all really have is via Radio 4 but it seems the discussions range far and wide attracting virtual discussions .Final thought. Isn't is interesting how the 'Anna' creature used to cut off any discussion which became vaguely challenging. I tried to raise the issue of the massive USA coverage on BBC but this never progressed in an intelligent way.Why do other people spend part of their finite hours on this planet tapping away on these MBs.....? |

My reasons are similar, A-Adult. I have listened to Radio 4 since Archie Andrews was a lad, as it were, and so when I happened upon the R4 Messageboard, it's as if I heard clarions of trumpets and fancy wrought-iron gates opening and me being beckoned inward to join in, to contribute something to the world that R4 had created. Well, maybe that's putting it a bit to over-poetically, but I'm sure you get the drift. My point being that I had no experience of messageboards, and so it was a terrific novelty, where people could happily tell me I was talking garbage and with potty metaphorical qualities (on occaision, not often....) and I could do the same. And the subject-areas were always anchored to that which was heard on R4, which was not unreasonable, (apart from the way it was woman-handled by Anna) thus it was vexing at times. So now the roots of ther R4 board have been eradicated by R4 itself, I was greatly pleased to see a flower grew from the compost left behind, and here we are, ultimately thanks to Caissier. In a sense we are the people who liked nattering to each other, for the most part; sadly then the dissenters who one could argue with have not materialised, so the challenge of a healthy nip-and-tuck argument never really arises. But that does in no way harm what happens here. I presume there are oodles of other m-boards composed of a few e-chums, but unlike f-book, people here at least have the ability say something more cogent than "hi, I've just tied my shoelace up!!!!!". or similar. |

Also the humour on here can be surreal. I’m still chuckling at ‘Frog goes into a bank…’ (nice one Norm - oooh - click me...! ) |

I like it here, people are generally polite but we can have a bit of banter. It's a tad slow sometimes, so we could do with a few more regular posters. However, there is little point in trying to bus them in from another board: we've seen where that leads. |

Well, I don't really have Radio 4 in common. I came to message boards in 2004 when I was in England and happened to look up the 100 Favourite Books or something, which took me to the BBC message boards, thence to the history boards (closing now on 22nd December!) and then someone (Stoggler) suggested I might like the WOM one, so there I was when it closed. I like talking to people with similar interests which isn't all that easy in a town of 350 in southern NZ and I liked reading and writing, and I don't like work, especially housework, so this suits me down to the ground. I wondered about mentioning this board to the BBC History one - not that anyone here does any history, as witness the last time a history thread was added to. Would it be all right, or would you prefer me not to? Some of the people there can be a little brusque. I do like a very polite board, being rather cowardly. Cheers, Caro. |

...................but unlike f-book, people here at least have the ability say something more cogent than "hi, I've just tied my shoelace up!!!!!". or similar......... .........and they're the "Smarties"..... Indoors I tend to listen to R4 via computer so, when I discovered their message boards, it was (like HMJ) an ideal place to comment on programmes and, initially, news items. Sadly, 'ANNA' had a far stricter interpretation of what was 'acceptable' than other 'mods' and it often frustrated sensible debate. However, for all its faults, there was little personal abuse (although my very first posting fell foul, due to a spelling mistake, to one AHL and his comments almost stopped me bothering again) ..... I suppose we all have time on our hands.... |

There was no spelling mistake in my very first posting, but the outcome was the same. |

No! I've told you Anna is a happy local community gardener and book club enthusiast, who has left all that moding to what's left at the BBC!

I find some of the posts very amusing. “Give the frog a loan…” was regurgitated frequently over the Christmas holiday The dialogue with Petrol Station Attendant was hilarious, courtesy of the Bush Doctor. |
