This was Becky's idea, sorry if I beat you to it Becky :)

Here's an early evening track to start us off:

I didn't know Baxter had recorded anything. He was featured in the Andy Serkis film (Sex Drugs Rock n Roll). This isn't bad. I like the 'Baxter' 'Soup' connection. :)

The 'Birdie Song'...
It'll empty the bar immediately, I'll get served and, when I smash the bloody jukebox, no jury in the land would convict me when I plead 'justifiable provocation'.

Here's Shuggie Otis with 'Inspiration Information' - a classic track from a classic album

I think the only one I know (and like) from Shuggie is Strawberry Letter 23

Watched an excellent programme on BBC4 the other night that featured this song. It was billed as "An intriguing investigation into the extraordinary life of Gershwin's classic composition, Summertime" and very enjoyable it was too.

I think it deserves a place on our jukebox.

There are over 25.000 versions of the song ...here are a couple ....

I have a great version of 'summertime' by Dr Michael White, a fine musician who lost everything in Katrina. Here he is live.

Bill Evans was close to genius. My wife wants his 'Lullaby for Helene' played at her funeral. (the quartet version, not the one with the added strings)

Seems to have been removed from youtube (not available in your country) - shame :(

I saw Archie Shepp at the Odeon Hammersmith in 1967. He shared the bill with the Miles Davis Quintet. He was playing very avant-garde free jazz in those days, which didn't go down too well with the audience - half of which walked out half way through the set.
He seems to have mellowed.

He played at the London jazz festival this year in a duet with Joachim Kuhn. some of the concert is available on iplayer (jazz on 3) but there is 5 minutes of a late running prog. you have to endure first. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b017cj4r/Jazz_on_3_London_Jazz_Festival_Archie_Shepp_and_Joachim_Kuhn/

That's a beautiful piece of music

I found a version of it but it might not be the version Mrs Rum wants...

Two more great versions of Summertime,Rum and dai <ok>
This thread could be taken up with versions of it :)

Thanks Becky. It's from an album called 'From left to right' , where Bill featured the Fender Rhodes electric piano for the first time. There are alternative versions of some tracks ('quartet only' and with added strings). I am not a fan of adding strings to anything but it was 'the thing' for a while with jazz albums. It still a great track though <ok>

Love the IF track too! :)

I like this Dai <ok> She is playing one of those guitars that come in bits, for travel. Sounds ok though and I like her playing. It does look like she has got the neck back to front but that's how it comes. I spent a lot of time looking at travel guitars (left handed is not easy to find). I did decide on one but didn't buy it in the end.

That's a real toe tapper.Rum <ok>

I watched a film on TV the other night and this standard was on at the beginning of it....the version was so beautiful I made sure I looked it up to see who was singing it .... it was k.d. lang..it's very short but very sweet...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-o92_OI5OU

In the film ...a true story ...one of the characters lives in a house built by an ancestor of Johnny Mercer so I'm betting it was Clint Eastwood, (a music man himself )who directed the film, who decided to have a soundtrack to the film with his songs on it.

I am a fan of Hank Williams but I suspect he nicked the tune for Jambalaya, I have heard a number of things that sound very simillar. I like the Cajun lyrics on this version but the 'English' version makes me smile because I remember having breakfast in a little cafe/restaurant near the market in New Orleans and seeing the lunch options chalked up on the board. Although they were not all in exactly the same order as the song they did have 'jambalaya, crawfish pie and filé gumbo'.

My favourite memory is seeing him at a free gig in the City (some City of London Jazz Fest thingy many years ago with a young Guy Barker) when a gust of wind blew the music off his stand and he went into a few bars of 'Stormy weather' and seamlessly back into the number - pure class!

It's got a very tricky line to sing:

'I wish someone would come along and run into me and wreck it'

Not as difficult as 'Hard to handle' by Otis Redding, though

'let me light your candle
cos mama I'm sure hard to handle now, yes sir I am'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ZxN9iQM7OY

I hope the link is correct, I can't check it at work.
