Fed up with hearing the same old Christmas songs on the radio and in shops? Let's have some alternative Christmas songs. Here is a great version of (Click here) for Christmas Rock 'n' Roll Oops, correction written by Johnny Marks and Marvin Brodie and published by St. Nicholas Music (ASCAP). The song was first recorded by Chuck Berry in 1958I don't know what I was thinking, I knew it was an old Ckuck Berry song (I thought he wrote it) but I had the Keef version in my head for some reason.

Have you never listened to "An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer", becky? It's a classic. Not sure this counts as "alternative" but it's powerful stuff. However, I'd advise against watching the video if you're easily upset. So This Is Christmas |

"A Merry Jingle" by The Greedies (aka Thin Lizzy & The Sex Pistols). Here's the Kenny Everett performance, with Hot Gossip and the crew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1mqLii-8SPY There's a TOTP version too, but it's nowhere near as good. If you have the 7" single (I do) the flip side is "A Merry Jangle", which is the A side played backwards. Don't you hear Satanic messages if you play a record backwards?

I don't know it either, Tick. I have a Christmas playlist on my ipod (50 songs), including Bill Evans - Santa Claus is coming to town, as well as songs by Dinah Washington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday and a nice version of 'Have yourself a merry little Christmas by Mrs Elvis Costello (Diana Krall ). There is some Dixieland and Bluegrass versions of 'Rudolph', 'Jingle Bells', etc. I seem to be missing Brenda Lee though - 'Rockin' around the Christmas Tree'.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w05oOXJPHbQ |

I don't have too much trouble remembering all the words, since I wrote them - albeit a long time ago - which, of course, explains why you've never heard of it - only a handful of people have. |

Since the "Imagine" programme last summer, I've been getting to know Harry Nilsson's stuff a lot better. So I'll nominate - "Remember (Christmas)" (Sorry; don't know how to do links.) Like all the best Nilsson originals, it's a downbeat tale of lost love and crushed dreams. Although it's in the title - between brackets as I've written it - the word "Christmas" doesn't appear in the lyric. I get the feeling Harry felt the same way about Christmas as I do... |

Go to the web page you want ...right click on the URL and click on cut Go back to where you want to post it (on this forum for instance) and click paste and it should appear... Others, no doubt, have other ways of doing it I loved the Harry Nilsson programme...

My friend T Bone was moaning on his blog about Christmas songs, so I challenged him to write one. He started at 5.30 yesterday morning (woke up with most of the lyric in his head) and here it is; written, arranged, perfomed and out on Youtube. Mystery of Christmas I haven't started yet - might be ready for 2012 ![]() |

Check out his blog. It's quite an interesting insight into being a musician. http://tboneduffy.blogspot.com/ He was 60 this month and his Mrs got him a lap steel guitar, which he is learning and it is leading to a lot of country stuff. He is also collaborating with a guy called Linton Osborne (a country singer/songwriter and part time Elvis tribute act). Linton sends him the rough song, with the vocal and T Bone produces it. It's not mind blowing stuff but it is amazing what one guy can do in the back bedroom of a small flat. He is a good live performer, his band are called 'The Kinemas' (they do interesting covers). I had a brief look at his blog when you posted the link a day or two ago - which is why I ended up listening to some of his stuff on youtube. I'll have a more thorough look when I have time, although it's a bit late for me to become a musician. |

All my musical buddies are writing Christmas songs, I feel quite left out ![]() Here's Linton Osborne with 'Buble for Christmas', which he wrote after seeing TBone's song on Youtube. Written and recorded in about an hour. http://soundcloud.com/linton-osborne/buble-for-xmas |

Interesting, Tick. What is truly amazing to me about this is the manicure on her fretting hand, how can she play with nails like that? I see a Les Paul in the background and I'd be interested to see if she uses the same technique to play that. I'd like to hear her play a classical piece, more suited to her style. It's not a style I know much about but she seems technically very adept. However, this feels like a bit of a party trick, which is good fun but I wouldn't want to sit through an entire concert of it. I'm sure there is a lot more to her and I will be keeping an eye out for Sandra. |

Just checking out some of Sandra's other stuff, she is very talented. She does have a lot of tricks like this tapping thing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CU3ztMEMj1g&feature=autoplay&list=UL217evo6AngU&lf=mfu_in_order&playnext=1 but she can also play with a bit of passion http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=217evo6AngU&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL |
