How wonderful is our long term memory! <star>

On 24th June last year, when this forum was only ten days old, Becky opened a thread here in Music called Glastonbury - it was very much she and me at first (Rum was away!) and after she had listed some of the sets she was hoping to catch at the festival, I replied thus:

"Often in the past, I've enjoyed catching acts totally new to me and I hope this year that will continue...enjoy the accoustic sessions too; last year a wonderful rendition of Radiohead's 'creep' on female vocal, double bass and guitar, that still lingers in my mind....just can't find who the girl was....."

Becks replied "I can't help you with the name of the person who sang Creep, Mobs ..I've tried Googling it but come up with nothing.

I replied: On Creep: I sent a an email to Jo Whiley soon after the concert (G/2010) but didn't get a reply - went through all the sets featured @ G on the internet - nothing!....thought it might have been Ellie Golding but not sure...

...and that was that, until just now when I was looking at this week's Culture and saw a tiny inset picture of a girl holding a microphone on the Friday 27th January page - an Ad for her concert on Sky Arts 1 @ 6pm - the singer is Eliza Doolittle - and immediately a bell rang in my head; I looked her up on Google and lo and behold there she was - linked to Youtube to see her singing Creep with the guy on a double bass and RUMBABA and a guy with an accoustic stick - don't know what that's called?!

It's not the Glastonbury set as it's filmed at Hyde Park with background traffic sound effects...but it's solved my little mystery since July 2010... - I say again - how great is long term memory....and that old adage "everything comes to he who waits".... <angel> <ok> <laugh>

I can't open this at work but I'll check it tonight. You mean an 'acoustic' as opposed to an 'electric' stick? I'm intrigued <erm> Maybe it's a Chapman stick (does it have strings?). I don't recall doing the gig but I'll take your word for it Mobs. <laugh>

<laugh> <laugh> are you sure you weren't at the Gig Rum! <laugh> ...ok so not sure where you were in June 2010, but in 2011 you were in Madrid!

*Do you know what it is yet? * ...asks Rolf! ... ... is it a washboard of some kind?

and yes, Becks, it is pleasing - but just shows you how much info the internet actually holds - which in some ways is pretty scary! <whistles>

It's a drum box thingy (not sure of the correct name) that you sit on and tap. You sometimes see bands using them for acoustic sets where it isn't practical to set up a kit. It's like tapping an acoustic guitar.

This is a Chapman Stick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JjimMO2SdE

It's a cajon box, isn't it (accent on the 'o' but unreliable on the AppleMac - 'cajón')? Originally developed from a tea chest, and not to be confused under any circumstances with a 'cojon box'! <yikes>

Are you sure that wasn't you on guitar, rum?

I played it through my work laptop, without speakers or phones and it sounded like there was a lot of wind whistling noise. No, def not me on guitar ( the last time I accompanied Eliza Doolittle she was singing 'wouldn't it be luvverly') <laugh> RUMBABA

Probably because it's not the one that beguiled me in 2010; when she sang it live with this same trio of musicians she was on the little accoustic stage the Beeb set up at G....with presenter Jo Whiley. This is the only version I could find, which is a bit strange looking and certainly not helped by the background noise and the weird setting in Hyde Park which looks like they've just been transported there, Startrek fashion, to sing the song! Anyway the point is I have found out who the singer was!!! <whistles>

"In contemporary times, the instrument became an integral part of Peruvian music and Cuban music. In Cuba, it is known as a Cuban box drum that was originally used to play Rumba Yambu and now incorporated into many other styles"
