I've seen Sonny live a few times and he is a terrific live performer as well as being extremely influential. People often forget how influential he was because of what came after him.

I don't have digital channels so I'll miss these shows.

I think I saw in a TV guide that, on the same night, they're repeating a series first shown in 2009; to mark the 50th anniversary of four classic '59 albums -

Miles, "Kind Of Blue"
Mingus, "Ah Um"
Ornette, "The Shape Of Jazz To Come"

It didn't make it to BBC2 so I didn't see it; but I half-remember that Brubeck's "Time Out" was the other one.

Up until around that period, music docs on BBC3 and BBC4 used to get a repeat on BBC2; usually on Fri nights, after "The Late Review".

I enjoyed some good ones:

"Hotel California" - based on the superb book by Barney Hoskyns

The series about 50s/60s Brit jazz.
(Joe Harriott, Mike Westbrook, Stan Tracey's brilliant treatment of "Under Milk Wood".
It even - quite rightly! - allowed the catchy Sonny Rollins score for "Alfie".)

Alas, they don't do that transfer to BBC2 no more...

A shame Macy-Cee, there is a lot of good stuff on the digital channels that you would appreciate. Sky Arts is sometimes good on music.

You may have been put off by the thread title but I would be interested to hear what you think of the Whitney Houston / Archie Shepp collaboration I posted on the Whitney thread. It's a Hugh Hopper song (Soft Machine). Whitney was only 18 at the time.

This is fabulous! Sonny from Ronnie's 1974. Yentob / Bragg were involved. A jazz bagpipe player with him. I'm loving this!

I'm not the biggest fan of jazz but like lots of pieces of it well enough ...watching Sonny playing alone and with his friends the other night was just magical...lovely,lovely sound...
