In an article called "Gin-Shops" (his hyphen) from his "Sketches by Boz", here are the "inviting and wholesome liqueurs" yer man Dickens lists:

"The Cream of the Valley"
"The Out and Out"
"The No Mistake"
"The Good for Mixing"
"The real Knock-me-down"
"The celebrated Butter Gin"
"The regular Flare-up"

Alas for Rum and Mobs - no recipes!

(Is it just me, or could a few of those have come straight out of a Damon Runyon story?)

Great liquor names! I'm surprised that in his bicentenary year, no-one has decided to revive these titles, creating a suitable concoction to fit the name!

Anyone wanting to read Dicken's short story 'Gin-Shops' click on this link....

and if anyone wants a framed picture of the illustration by George Cruickshank of 'Sketches by Boz, The Gin Shop' here's the link that shows it off pretty well!http://www.lordprice.co.uk/LTCD1031-Gin-Shop.html

I suspect the recipes weren't too different from the Monty Python "Spam" sketch.

Gin, gin, gin, ingredient X, and gin.
Gin, gin, ingredient Y, gin, and gin.
Gin, ingredient Z, gin, gin, and gin.
