LOU REED'S 70th Birthday so says Diffords.... Living legend and all round caner (whats that?) Lou Reed turns - eek! - 70 today, and is, amazingly, still going strong. He began his career with the Velvet Underground, whose lo-fi sound brought them fans including Andy Warhol, who added the actress-model Nico to the mix. By the 70s, he was a solo artist, producing Transformer, one of the great rock albums of all time. One of music's great survivors, Reed outlasted the electro-convulsive therapy given to him as a teenager to "cure" his bisexuality, and addictions to both heroin and alcohol to become a grand old man of arthouse rock. He even seems to have matured from savage putdowns such as "Dylan gets on my nerves. If you were at a party with him, I think you'd tell him to shut up," to a more meditative status. Today both his lyrics and his photographs have been published as books, though he still records from time to time, releasing a collaboration with Metallica last year. Happy birthday, sir! We are toasting you with a Velvet Threesome.
