Yes! Happy 95th Birthday Dame Vera....there's Nothing Like a Dame!

I last saw her on 20th August 2010 at the Battle of Britain ceremony in Whitehall - she attended the commemorative ceremony for the Battle of Britain, held at the Churchill War Rooms, and sang a few bars of We'll meet Again after Robert Hardy read Winston Churchill's stirring "so much owed by so many to so few" speech at 3.25pm exactly 70 years after he had delivered it in Parliament. His daughter, Lady Soames, was there and so was Marguerite Pattern, who was in a wheelchair.

The remaining veterans were in attendance and there was a splendid solitary Spitfire on display, which they stood in front of whilst everyone took photographs, especially when Dame Vera joined them.....and when the world's oldest Spitfire and a Hurricane fighter flew overhead over the government buildings, everyone seemed to be waving a union jack.

I snapped this photo of her as she was leaving; she squared up to me and I put out my hand to shake hers - just for a second or two, and then she was directed to a waiting car by her friend.....

Here's Marguerite Pattern, who wrote many wartime cookery books and post war and was awarded a CBE in 2010 and is a great friend of Vera.

Happy Birthday Dame Vera.
I am old enough to remember her singing with Ambrose (The Bert Ambrose Orchestra) before WW2

Yes, because I took her picture without her permission! Grrrrr! ...no I meant to say that she manoeuvred to straighten and shift directly in front of me in order that we could shake hands!!!! <erm>
