On the battered, bruised, under-funded and evicted from its historic home World Service put togeather a fantastic effort based around the telegraph messages going back and forth in the darkness of the North Atlantic ..... very evocative and an excellent use of voice, sound effects, timing and silences .... the art of radio. I really do recommend it ....

The messages after the sinking partly suggest why the event has gone down in history. It was an event in the social calendar and triggered a 'media scrum'.

(There was a very good Timewatch about the Titanic a few days ago but 'not available' for some reason; dispelling myths,. naming the guilty, exonerating others, modifying Lightollers reputaton - he sent away half-empty boats; 700 empty places, not allowing men to get in them - and packed with interesting information ..... balanced, coherent and fluent - dating back to before the current documentary lunacy, which was seen quite often in a preceding swoopy-whoopy, over-musicalised programme about the iceberg.)

I watched that with narration from Bernard Hill who played Captain E.J. Smith in Titanic.

Some of the newspaper coverage of the story was nothing short of scandalous.. :'(

The Free Press and Journal's headline at the time was:

'Dundee man lost at sea'

On Breakfast tv this morning RJ Gibb, son of Robin, promoted their new work, The Titanic Requiem, which was performed live by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at Westminster City Hall on Tuesday....he said his father was heartbroken to have missed the premiere of their debut classical work, but he is back in hospital fitting off an infection after his treatment for colon cancer and pneumonia. We wish him a speedy recovery too!

I always feel so depressed watching 'disaster at sea' movies - after watching the James Cameron film on the big screen - friends and I hot-footed it to the Barbican bar for a stiff whisky ....or two!

Tonight on BBC2 @ 8.30pm: Titanic A Commemoration in Music and Film.....John Humpreys marks the centenary of the tragedy live from Belfast's Waterfront Hall. Bryan Ferry and Joss Stone (wondered what had happened to her since Adele's meteoric success!) are among those performing in the shadow of the Harland and Wolff shipyard....

Spent an enjoyable time yesterday afternoon looking round the Merseyside Maritime Museum on the Albert Dock in Liverpool at their "Titanic and Liverpool: the untold story" exhibition.

To mark the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic, this compelling exhibition explores Liverpool's central role in the Titanic story.

The exhibition features previously unseen collections of international significance including material from Merseyside Maritime Museum's extensive archives. It complements the museum's permanent gallery, the hugely popular Titanic, Lusitania and the Forgotten Empress.

New in August 2012: a display of previously unseen items, including letters sent from the Titanic.
