I read Levon's book about 'The Band' (This wheel's on fire). It's a good read but he is very bitter abour Robbie Robertson, a dislike that tipped over the edge when RR didn't go Richard Manuel's (The Band's piano player) funeral. Robbie was savvy and had an eye on the money while the rest were living the rock n roll lifestyle. Most of the songs ended up being published as RR songs. Another thing that rankled was the photogenic Robbie being shot in close up by his mate Martin Scorsese, lip synching along to some of the songs like he was the lead voice, during 'The Last Waltz' (film of The Band's last concert) when he was the only member of the band that couldn't really sing. They practically invented the musical genre known as 'Americana' although Levon was the only member from the deep South, the rest were Canadians. Here they are from 'The Last Waltz', with The Staple Singers guesting. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjCw3-YTffo Edited by rumbaba, Apr 20 2012, 07:42 AM.

Yep; great band, sad loss. The other day I was listening to my fave Neil Young, "On The Beach", and was reminded that he played on a couple of tracks. Barney Hoskyn's "Across The Great Divide" is a superb book about The Band. |
