Can't help thinking: What a waste of a life! She could have been a beacon and a stalwart servant of this country like her older sister, instead of being a drain on it - a petulant, self indulgent, bad tempered (especially in her latter years), snobbish and selfish, excessive gin drinking, cigarette smoking woman...thank goodness the Queen inadvertently saw off that style of monarchy.....Diana was partly responsible for that!

It's hard luck when an ordinary woman is propelled by chance into the public eye, and expected to be a paragon of virtue.

As a pubescent boy, and begining to become aware of the attractions of the opposite sex, I remember being struck by her extraordinary beauty in her young days.

Yet another example of how Church/Government interference ruined lives.
Her and Townsend would have been a 'love match' but Churchill and the CofE refused to countenance it.
The same thing happened with Charles and Camilla.

Beautiful indeed ...

I always thought it peculiar that she scalded both feet when taking a bath ....when you dip your toe in you soon know if the water is too hot before putting the second foot in...all rather odd

not if the gin bottle was nearby!!! ...At Green's Champagne bar in St James's - note the name - they were obliged to keep a bottle or three under the counter when she visited - I saw actually them!...... it really was a case of Mother's ruin for her! She was a beautiful woman and I'm sure she had her moments; those days are over now and the Royals are expected to work to earn their keep!

You couldn't have had the Queen's sister marrying Pete Townsend: that would have been a step to far :)

not if the gin bottle was nearby!!!
I would have thought that she would have had a servant to run her bath and test the temperature of the water before her royal feet touched it.

I've done that. Put one foot in and thought, "Oh, it won't feel so hot in a moment - it's just because I've just got in - put the other foot in, then noticed they have BOTH gone lobster pink and are undeniably scaldingly unbearably painful ... "No, no two ways about it ..... GET OUT QUICK !!!"

Strange how gin helped to shorten Margaret's life and yet preserve the life of her dear old mum.

I think cigarettes had a large part to play in her demise too Norm!

She was a kind of full-on proper princess. I can imagine she really would have noticed a pea under her mattress. She never found the right person and appears to have been always unhappy. She became extremely difficult and rude to others - as a reaction perhaps? - and people played up to it with their sycophancy. It must be so strange to be royal.

I think Emily Blunt would be well-cast as princess Margaret ...........
