In a rare extended interview with John Wilson in the R4 Front Row slot at 7.15pm tonight, the Canadian singer-songwriter Neil Young discusses his latest disc, a selection of traditional songs, recorded with the uninhibited rock band Crazy Horse. The album includes a version of God Save The Queen, the anthem Young recalls singing as a schoolboy in Canada. Young, who topped the album charts on both sides of the Atlantic 40 years ago with his LP Harvest, also reflects on the role of the protest song in the age of the TV talent show, and considers his own instinctive approach to music-making, and his reluctance to become a crowd-pleaser. PS a large number of my all time faves are by Neil Young, I was listening to a few of them this afternoon. I'd listen to him if he sang the Birdie Song or even, perish the thought, God Save the Queen

I am a kinda reluctant fan - his wailing plaintiff voice accompanying heavy banjo beats used to get to me in the '70's and it still does in Twenty12 - couple of years back I made sure I had his acoustic and electric back catalogue on cd rather than the original vinyl that I also own. In this candid and revealing interview, he talks about the concept of his new album, Americana, revealing there wasn't one! Remembering dark old (folk) songs that kids in America sang from kindergarten - researching and reinserting original lyrics to songs that had lost them over time...talking about the 'folk' song that closes the album he explains he woke up one morning and he was singing God Save the Queen ...."used to sing it at school in Canada every morning" - he had to figure out what tempo it was in, figure out an actual arrangement, add a choir and after six takes he felt it was what he wanted....he saw it as important as part of the American Revolution whilst throwing off the reins of the British Empire...they were singing My Country Tis of Thee with the same melody...."up for grabs where the melody came from" says Young. His rendition of God Save The Queen including the second verse with original lyrics - "the war torn verse" which he uses, accompanies a black and white video of the Queen's 1952 Coronation on his official website, of this he says "The Coronation was amazing - it was fantastic - the Queen was looking great - everybody was in love with her - they had every piece of gold in the British Empire there, the carriage was amazing it was just a very proud and beautiful time and everybody was feeling really good." God Save the Queen - Neil Young's version from Americana http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-nPsrX05Rk Edited by Mobson, Jun 9 2012, 11:59 AM.

I've just recorded Americana from the streamed version on the Guardian which I posted a link to yesterday, and I've now split it into tracks. What fascinates me is the way he takes a song like "Clementine" (which I remember from when Huckleberry Hound used to mangle it in the cartoon series) and makes it sound exactly like a Neil Young song. It's not only the sound of his voice, but the chord progressions he uses and the whole sound of the track. |

I've listened to most of the tracks and have to say this is not one for me! Noisy and quite inconsequential - what's the point? Please give us original tunes with original lyrics, Neil.....
