It's Roy Orbison's turn to be feted tonight on BBC4 - maybe some day, perhaps around 2017, it might find a woman it deems worthy of a tribute evening; for now however, it's sticking to the male music icons, such as the Texan balladeer, he of the sleek swept back black hair and black outfits and dark glasses... A three-part gala starts with The Big O in Britain; about his popularity and links here...I saw him once sitting alone in the back of a big black sedan in a motorway car park, eating cold Heinz baked beans out of the tin with a plastic spoon - not quite the image the Beeb would be after! Continues with him singing hits such as Pretty Woman in Roy Orbison Live in 1965 and ends with him sining them again in Roy Orbison & Friends, but this time with all-star backing.... A legend indeed! I've always been a big fan of his music without knowing much about him. Just watched The Big O in Britain, and can only be lost in admiration for a man who ate cold Heinz baked beans from the tin and recited sketches from Monty P. There was a man who surely died too soon. |

I like playing the song 'Pretty woman' but, among my friends, I seem to be alone in finding the lyric a bit creepy/pervy. Roy did a lot of early rock n roll and I really like 'Casting my spell' , which you never hear. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuYdeaUrGIE |

Sky Art had "Roy Orbison and Friends" on late one night about a week or three ago. What a great prog that was. |

One of my favourite artistes..... I saw all these programmes the first time (still got them on tape if I'm not mistaken) round but Roy is always worth a look and listen....what a voice he had and what wonderful songs he composed and sung..so very sad he died so young .. Martina Navratilova chose Crying by him and k.d. lang as one of her Desert Island Discs on last week's programme, which I listened to this morning. Some less well know ones of his I love A couple of Don Gibson songs he covered.... A Legend In My Time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dy2n0ZpQcPs Too Soon To Know http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpBTLsxqng4 and one of his own The Actress http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3vGj26Tmss Oh, and one that played at the end of an episode of Mad Men Shahdaroba http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXe3gnBsg0o It's no good it's going to be a Roy Orbison afternoon for me starting with the Lonely and Blue album.... ...

Watched all three progs last night. Loved the audience in the clips from 1965, they were really interesting - in the way that earned Steve Davis such a sobriquet. The Roy Orbison and Friends evening looked tremendous fun. Bruce was certainly enjoying himself. And Jackson was there, too. I guess Roy was a bit overweight, which may have been a reason for his heart attack. Was that because of all the pies and mash? |

.... and the baked beans! he loved British 'comfort' food didn't he...I should add that when I saw him in that motorway car park stop-off munching on beans from a can, it would have been around 1967/8 when his career was in definite decline...I was with an American, who knew him so he went to the car, and when Roy pulled down the car window they talked for a bit - they'd met in California through Clint Eastwood who my friend hung around with when they were both trying to get into the movies early on (my friend always claimed to be the illegitimate son of cowboy Tom Mix and an indian squaw) - when he came to England he made 3 quite well known films but eventually went on to become a very talented and distinguished jewellery designer in London, taking commissions from Elton John, - he made him a wonderful giant diamond treble cleft & Macca to name but two.... Oh and Roy ...well we all know what happened to him and his ultimate revival...

If people ask my favourite singers, Roy Orbison is at the top of the list. It is one of my life's regrets that he came to Christchurch to perform in 1980 (or maybe 1973) which was about 200 kms from our home. I thought of going to see him, but it was soon after we returned from a trip to Britain, and I didn't feel like tripping away so soon. Wish I had now. Why is it so hard to find touring dates for these important artists? I have tried to do this before and not been able to find out. |

I'd have thought that "these important artists" all had official websites and that said websites would contain details of upcoming tours, but maybe not. Such things are beyond my means, so it's not something I'd look out for. |

Most artists usually do have their own websites and a list of upcoming events & gigs....ticketmaster also sends a weekly missive on gigs and shows around the country (Uk)...there are several really good theatre websites, especially for London.....

It isn't the upcoming tours I want to know - or the tribute ones. I wanted to know if Roy Orbison was in NZ in 1980 or 1973 or both. I know he was here in 1980, but only because someone sold a programme on TradeMe (our equivalent of EBay) for the concert. I think I looked at the Roy Orbison official website (though more than one said that). There's plenty about him being here in 1965 too, but that's because his supporting act became one of NZ's best-known bands playing one of our most enduring songs. It's happened before to me - I can't find when artists have toured NZ. All I wanted to do was know what date to put in a silly little post here, and it took me half an hour searching the internet before I gave up. Must be googling the wrong words somehow. |
