Have a good one, Douglas (though I'm not sure you should be having birthdays at your age).

Blow out the candles of your cake.
They will not leave you in the dark,
Who round with grace this dusky arc
Of the grand tour which souls must take.

You who have sounded William Blake,
And the still pool, to Plato's mark,
Blow out the candles of your cake.
They will not leave you in the dark.

Yet, for your friends' benighted sake,
Detain your upward-flying spark;
Get us that wish, though like the lark
You whet your wings till dawn shall break:
Blow out the candles of your cake.

Richard Wilbur

Too Many Candles

Happy Birthday Douglas <magic> ....hope you are having a grand time! I just waived to the 'Airman' as I passed by the BCM; -they wished you a happy birthday too (or I'm sure they would have done had they known it was today!) <rose>

Thanks, everyone.

It was a fairly quiet day.
I went round to my daughter's for a simple evening meal.
She had baked me a cake, Victoria Sponge, but no candles.
She did say that she had done one with 90 candles for her mother-in-law.
It had taken a highly organised team to get them all lit before the first burnt out.

The big family do is on Oxford on Saturday when one of my granddaughters is getting married in New College chapel.

The wedding went very well indeed. The weather was fine but not too hot as it has now become.

A room had been arranged for me and my girl-friend. Ruth, at New College for Friday and Saturday nights but, as she had travelled from Edinburgh and never been to Oxford before, I booked a room at Christ Church for Sunday and Monday so that she could see more of the city.

Apart from two very brief meetings with my daughter, this was the first time any of my family had met Grandpa's girl-friend. I think they all approved and were glad she had saved me from being a sad old widower.

Well, you're a dark horse, Douglas.

We've just got home after a day in Oxford. Went to a 60th birthday do in Dorchester-on-Thames last night and continued on to the city of dreaming spires this morning. Lots of walking, a picnic in the Parks, and this evening we took in an excellent open-air performance of "Hamlet" in the quad at the Bod.

....have an old friend who lives in Dorchester-on-Thames...when his beloved wife died he left London to relocate nearer to family established there... he's an ex-CEO of Gillette, a veteran traveller and plays golf....ring any bells ticks?

I don't think there were any residents of Dorchester at the birthday bash, Mobs - and I'm not at all sure why it was held there. The birthday girl lives in Peru and is over here for a couple of weeks with her husband, who went to great lengths to organize a surprise party, and their youngest son, who is looking at universities here. We had never met the son before, so you can imagine how long it is since we last saw the parents. In fact we only re-established contact with them a couple of years ago, when Grace 2 decided that she wanted to spend a gap year in S. America.

<ok> Ah ok....contacts and links - very important to keep them up! although just at this time, I wish I could be invisible - I have people wanting to come to London to stay or visit, and even if it is not with me, they want to tax my brain on everything cultural and social going on right now! <scared>

Sorry Douglas! we've gone off topic but we're apt to do that here! <wink>
